Nihayat al-Su'l wa'l Umniyaya fi Ta'lim A'mal al-Furusiyya

Post by Ottokar »

Some excerpts from the Nihayat al-Su'l wa'l Umniyaya fi Ta'lim A'mal al-Furusiyya, or Complete Instructions in the Practices of the Military Art, a Mamluk cavalry training compiled between 1250 and 1500.

This part is of greatest interest to me:

"...A padded garment can be worn beneath the jawshan, as the Europeans wear beneath their iron cuirasses."
"When a land rejects her legends, Sees but falsehoods in the past;
And its people view their Sires in the light of fools and liars,
'Tis a sign of its decline and its glories cannot last."

And, of course, Dom Duarte's book on cavalry combat is being published by Chivalry Bookshelf.

I find it interesting the parts related to Greek Fire... I guess I didn't think it was as common as it must have been, there are a great deal of words dedicated to its use and defense against its use in this tract.
