Moving date Pensic 36 and beyond

Post by Hrolfr »

Off the Middle Kingdom mailing list-

Cordial greetings unto the populace of the Known World from Rosamund
Beauvisage, Mayor of Pennsic 36.

I am pleased to announce that the Pennsic War will be held one week earlier
in 2007 than has been the case in the last number of years. By the old
schedule, Pennsic 36 Troll would have opened on Friday, 3 August 2007 and
the site would have closed on Sunday, 19 August 2007. Under the new
schedule, Pennsic 36 Troll will open on Friday, 27 July 2007 and the site
will close on Sunday, 12 August 2007. This year’s War, Pennsic 35, will not
be affected.

The decision to move Pennsic up a week was not undertaken lightly and was
prompted by steadily-increasing concern about the conflict between Pennsic
and school calendars. School districts across the country have been
starting earlier and earlier, a situation preventing many parents and their
school-age children from attending, especially since many can often only
stay for only the first part of War even though that means they have to pay
for both weeks. The situation similarly affects our members who are
educators.

On 20 May 2006, after six months of investigation, the Kingdom Seneschal
Group (the Seneschals of Aethelmearc, the East and the Middle,
alphabetically), approved the change in accordance with the Pennsic
Administrative Policies. Their respective Crowns concurred, as did the
management of Coopers Lake Campground.

By the time this announcement is published, the new schedule for future
Pennsic Wars will be available on the Pennsic War website
<www.pennsicwar.org>.

Thank you in advance for your time. See you at the War!

In service to the Society,
Baroness Rosamund Beauvisage, OP, OL
Mayor, Pennsic War 36

Excellent! I may be able to go to Pennsic next year!

Working for a University's IT department, getting new students set up with computers and e-mail addys causes my dept to have a time off "freeze" in mid-late August.

returning to Pennsic for the War week will be stupendous!

Sweet! I am one of those people who are in college, and down here, we start earlier than up north. I am getting to make Pennsic this year, but having to leave by Thurs. of War Week to make it back for Rush (which is just about as fun!). This is great news. Now if only Gulf Wars would land on my Spring Break for once, everything would be perfect.
Westerners, we have forgotten our origins. We speak all the diverse languages of the country in turn. Indeed the man who was poor at home attains opulence here; he who had no more than a few deiners, finds himself master of a fourtune.

This pretty much means that if I don't go for two weeks this year (not planned) I never will be able to again. (At least as long as I'm at this job.) It sucks for me, but I understand why they are doing it. Going to be hotter tho. bleck.

Hmm, this might make it easier for us transatlantics. Those flights in August are horribly expensive - this shift might help. :D

Going to clash with Wisby though, I guess.

Just for giggles, my Wife looked up the "average" temps for SLippery Rock and Butler.. the average temp difference, July to August, for the weeks concerned, is 1.2 degrees.

Can ya'll really tell the difference between 111 degrees and 112? :)

(Actually, I think it might be cooler, rather than hotter. PA tends to get its REALLY hot spells done during mid August, rather than July.. but this year.. who the hell knows!)

Doesn't it generally clash with Wisby Medieval Week ? That was my impression, but I admit being calendar challenged.

Well, it depends how you define "Pennsic". If you think of Pennsic just being the last "battle" week, it's usually possible to do both Wisby and Pennsic. A few folks do boh most years.

I LOVE the idea of a move- my oldest daughter's birthday is the 18th. This means that starting next year my name will no longer be "Mud" come August... :D

What really matters is, how does this affect Worldcon?
