Weapons pics for you guys to drool over..... armor too

Post by B. Fulton »

Visited the republic of San Marino yesterday.

Their Ancient arms museum (as opposed to modern arms) was nice.

Everything from medieval through Napoleonic and 1850s.

Here's a few, more to come (these were the best shots handy)

Image

Far as I can tell, 14th century jousting helm.
Image
Light cavalry armor, near as I can tell.

Image
Some very nice gauntlets!
Image
Maille, apparently with some scale type armor built into it.

Image
French Napoleonic Dragoon helmet.

Image
Inside dragoon breastplate.
Image
Not all this stuff was for show.
Image
Got to love the polearms!
Image

A very dressy sword.

Italian not being my specialty i think this is a Pappenheimer rapier.

Thought this was a winding key for a wheellock but it was the size of my fore-arm... any clues?

Those aren't Pappenheimer rapiers, they're smallswords, which replaced rapiers as the weapon of choice among the nobility in the latter part of the 17th century.

I was 50/50 over smallsword vs Pappeheimer, I thought they were a bit big for smallswords.

I'm guessing that the first helmet dates to c1560-70.

The light cavalry armour is probably c1650.

The majority was 1500s-on, but they did have some stuff that was from around the founding of the first tower (1253), 1300s era stuff. I've got more pics, not as clear, i'll post them.

The mail with plates looks like Jazerant, a type of armour I've always thought was pretty cool.

The lining in the dragoon's breastplate is quite interesting. I wonder how it might inform us about similar treatments in earlier bp's where liners may not have survived....

You can thank my wife for spotting it and getting a pic. She knew that was unusual. :)
