Duke Logan a question if I may...

Your Grace,
Having never seen you fight in person, I noticed on the "Duke Logan fight" vid that you generate serious shot power. I also noticed that you plant your feet, then fire. Now while I know this is proper, there was something else in your footwork that seems different. Did you ever do any other martial art or sport other than SCA combat?
I apologize if this seems trivial, Im just curious.

i am a former boxer and have dabbled in a few eastern martial arts. most of my sca sport combat mechanics come from my boxing background and from years of football. i generate most of my power with my upper body which, i know, some people will argue isnt the right way and all that jazz.

well as you know my shoulder has paid a price. my elbows (yes even that poor defenseless one all naked behind my shield.... oh the horror!) and wrists are fine. my thumbs, including the nuckle you ripped in half, are mostly fine. the rest of me.... well.... its the mileage.

Your Grace,

Like you I generate most of my power from my upper body. However I believe that you would find that if you looked at your technique that you actually do fire from your hip. It is just that the years of boxing alow you to transmit alot of force from a twitch in the hips and then through your back and shoulders into the shot. I just finished fighting at Raglan Castle and had a great day fighting. Other than the leg pain induced by the chivalry of Drachenwald on a newish SCA fighter the most muscle pain I had after a long and intense day of fighting was between the shoulder blades which is where the transfer of power is done. It is a just a matter of biomechanics.

just sayin'

youre probably right about that, i guess i just dont notice it. i was fighting in a scenario a few years ago and got backed into a wall. two fighters pressed into me at the wall and i was able to dispatch them both with intent. one of them came up to me afterwards and said he was surprised at how hard i hit him given that my back was pressed against the wall. i asked why he was surprised and he told me that he was always told that a man cant hit you hard if his back was against a wall. i used to beileve you couldnt strike hard with your back on the ground either, until i learned how to throw an elbow properly. too bad i just learned from our sem that the elbow is a fragile little thing that can not be protected by my big mean old shield. guess the idea of breaking people with elbow strikes is just an old wives tale afterall....

next time im reviewing fighting tape im going to pay attention and see how much of my hips/lrgs/belly/etc does get involved. again i think you are probably right, just want to verify that.
