dream team redux

i thought my brother andreas had a good idea with his spear team. i do not think that promoting these things is good for pennsic because it takes way too much time on the field from other tourneys. but i think its fun here.
being a weapon and shield guy and being the one that created the dreaded "10 man concordian team what changed the rules" (but holy crap was that a load of talent!!) i thought i would throw the next installment of fantasy team out there.
so here goes (and i will add my picks later). who are your picks for the top 10 man team with weapon and shield (and please indicate if the weapon is other than sword) in your kingdom and overall.
to make it easy to follow do it like this:
kingdom X
dude
other dude
guy (not sir guy, although he is good but you know what i mean)
other guy (still not guy unless..... crap!!)
that man
other that man (fights with a mace!)
overall
dude
other dude from kingdom y
guy (like in sir guy cuz i like him)
other guy (not as cool as sir guy and cant find his own name...)
nissan maxima
or whatever. just try to keep the format clean so we can read it fast.

Known world team:
Baldar (the Archduke)
Duke Gregory Ahearn (Trimaris, a beast in melees)
Duke Brannos (Middle, only guy to best both Baldar and myself in the Passage of Three Seas)
HRM Lucan (East, Not specifically a melee guy but always on my list of top SCA S+S fighters)(Fixed the title...all apologies)
Duke Davin (An Tir, Nice to have big strong guys and he's one of the strongest)
Duke Gareth (Meridies, Keeping with the big guy theme and no one ever expects him to be so fast)
Duke Edmund (Middle, kinda like bringing a spear)
Duke Mahadhi (another guy that's just an animal in melee)
Duke Christopher (Aethelmearc, A world-class fighter who seems to live for melee)
Although it will get my team disqualified, Duke Aveloc (another world-class fighter that lives for melees) (Funny, the only little guy I picked?)

Not to put too fine a point on this, but His Grace is now His Majesty. He is also the EK war-lord. This makes him "a melee guy." if you know what I mean. In fact, I would dare say His Majesty is the melee guy.

Ooops, I shoulda made a Trimaris list:
Baldar (The Archduke)
Duke Gregory (finally a duke)
Sir Cadwyd("CaDude")--This guy dropped out but it looks like he might drop back in and he's an awesome lefty who has a history of some amazing moments of heroism.
Duke Solomon Spite (Spider). Wish I had video of what he did in the allied champions' battle at Pensic a year ago...
Duke Bytor Fitzgerald (mutant strong)
Sir Arden Irontower--With mace and shield. Just plain scary.
Duke Odo Fitz Hugh
Sir Kurn O'Ferral (rather give him a spear, but a quality fighter that is smart)
HRM Martin
Sir Roland de Carr (sneaky lefty)
I left myself off because I just don't spend enough time in melee with sword and shield to perform as well as I should. Maybe thats something I should work on.... Nah, spear is too fun

Heh. I forgot he was king again right now. that's what happens I guess when I skip a Pensic. Not been keeping up with things much since I stepped down in April.
As to the "not specifically melee" comment, it wasn't to say he's not about melees, but to say that's not why I picked him. I picked him because my philosophy is the best way to make a strong team of fighters is to put in people who fight well and he is one of the best. As a strong sword and shield fighter who is mobile, has a strong defense, and is versatile, he can't help but be an asset in melees but honestly I haven't had enough contact with him to know whether melees are an important part of his game. Since you mentioned he's warlord of the East, that would seem to indicate melee is important to him and only reinforces my decision to include him.

I'll opt out of the known world team, because I don't fight enough shield to know that one well enough, but here's one for Northshield:
King Seigfried (recently been fighting a bunch of shield to get thre rest of us ready for crown, and a fearless monster in melee. Dang but he's good with nearly every weapon.)
Count Lars (the head of the western Bloodguard contingent, and great for getting into the right position in a battle)
Alexander, Lar's squire (makes Lars that much better, but the guy's good in melee on his own, too)
Viscount Robert the Thunderous (more than mutant strong, currently on the professional strongman circuit -- it's good he knows we're his friends)
Viscount Leif (loves the melee, and seems to have true magical defense there)
Duke Tarrach (another with the magical defense and no fear)
Viscount Hrodir (recently knighted, a windmill with good defense)
Sir Aubrey (lost some weight, quickened up considerably)
Vlad Radescu (yep, on the teams for both spear and shield)
Ingvar (gotten real good in the last couple years)

Credit given to each man on this list. However, Sir Tom Tintinnabulium is better (at melee) than any one individual on this Northshield list. Oh, and I would put you your Excellency on this list before others.

I agree with your assessment of Sir Tom, Your Grace. My kingdom is indeed fortunate to have him so recently moved here, and I'd grieve more at your loss if I weren't grinning so hard at our fortune. My reason for not putting him on this particular list is that he professes a limited knowledge of the use of the shield, which is a requirement for this. As well, I have not seen him use one, save a single instance, and that not in melee. If you look, I did include him on my team of ten for spear (as well as myself). My own prowess with the shield in melee is also not so good any on this list. I can hold my own in singles a bit, but my teamwork suffers if I use it in melee.

My fault did not read that it was weapon and shield. Sir Tom would not be able to hang with these guys under these guidlines.

Here is my shot at it:
AEthelmearc:
Duke Sir Morghun Sheridan
Count Master Robin Wallace
Duke Sir Rurik Longsword
Lord Wulfstan the Unshod
Duke Sir Malcolm MacEoghainn
Duke Sir Christopher of York
Count Sir Henri d'Artois
Ok, that is far as I can go. Don't know who else to pick. This is tough to do.

just a side question, is it an aethelmearc thing or what with the title stacking stuff? duke, count, sir, lord, baron, bob? i dont get it. sure i know that im a knight and a duke and all that jazz but heck im a count and a lord (3x actually) as well and me being a count is higher in the op than me being a knight so why on earth would i be duke sir and not duke count or duke count sir? its like calling my doctor, mrs dr jill. odd.
anyway, just struck me as weird while enjoying all the names (many i do not even know

).

I have often seen it done with all the titles here in AEthelmearc, thus my format. Personally, I did it so as to be sure not to offend by leaving something off. For the most part the "multi-titled" individuals I actually come into contact with generally prefer just one of the titles, or none at all outside of formal settings.

the funny thing about growin up in AEthelmearc is that everyone seems to use the stacked title when referring to individuals, but most of the individuals I know who have earned multiple titles hate the use of stacked titles.
I believe that period examples for this in formal settings, such as being introduced at court, would be to indicate the persons name and then list the titles:
such as
Bob The Builder, Knight of "X", Count of "Y", Order of the "Z", etc
and in greeting you would refer to the person as their highest ranking title such as "Your Grace," " Your Excellency" etc.
I do need to point out one thing regarding this thread..... Christopher of York rarely if ever fights with a shield in singles or melee, so for His Grace Logan's dream team S&S he isn't really applicable.... though he can use one and is very good with it, he is better with other forms.

unfortunately Wulfstan is in the East now. our loss. easily one of the top ten fighters in the SCA. he just doesn't care to be recognized. turned down being knighted at least twice i know of. prefers to be 'off the radar'.

Good start but what about adding Sirs Kadon and Aenghus MacBain..? then go to the Gauge's and throw in Duncan or Havoc....Havoc is a melee animal with weapon and shield.
If you had to take out Wulfstan , Keep both Duncan and Havoc..

Lol, no offense taken.
Its one of the reasons I dont like these kind of lists that much. Tourney guys always tend to find their way on them, though they are pretty much an albatross in melees, cause they decide to go into hero mode, instead of team mode.
Wont do a known world list, due to way to many names I would end up leaving off.
But for AEthelmearc S/S team for a 10 man melee, would have the following. And this is a list of folks I believe would work as a team, not as 10 individuals, so some bigger names who would wipe the tourney field with these names are gonna be left off.
Count Andrew McFarland of Wiggin
Duke Morgan Sheridan
Sir Isenwulf
THL Havoc
THL Magnus Tindal
Duke Malcolm MacEoghan
THL Hrothgar
THL Alric
Myself
Sir Aenghus McBain
Now for a just plain 10 man with all weapons that list would change drastically.
Duke Christopher of York (Spear)
Count Maynard (Polearm)
Sir Alonzio (Spear)
Count Andrew (S/S)
Duke Morghun (S/S)
Sir Trystan (Spear)
Duke Malcolm (S/S)
Myself (S/S)
Katdavar the Poisoner (Polearm)
Sir Aengus (S/S)
This is who I would want with me on the field on a 10 man. I am sure others will have a much different list.

Ahhh...I thought Wulfstan the Unshod was in AEthelmearc, my mistake.
I could easily add Duncan, as I have sen him fight a few times now, and he did very well in my humble opinion. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, I have not yet seen most of these other gentles fight, including Sir Aenghus, Sir Kadon, Syr Finn, or THL Havoc; though many of their reputations precede them. I am pretty new to the "fighting circuit" if you will, and still need to see some of our "Who's Who" fighters.

Here is my list for the "Shield and Weapon" Dream Team-
East-
Sir Konrad von Ulm- one of the most talented commanders and melee fighters I know.
Sir Stephan von Dresden- Simply the best sword and shiled fighter ever..
Duke Lucan- excellent commander and great melee skills.
Duke Kelson- Superior fighter. Great offence and defence.
Duke Gregor- Awesome skill with this form.
Count Thorson- Not the best fight on the team but knows where to go in a melee better than most.
Duke Brion- another one Duke killing machine
Duke Timothy- another great talent with sword and board.
Duke Darius- Hard to kill and good offence.
Duke Icefalcon- what can I say. I like melee.....
Known World-
Duke Baldar- Trimaris
Sir Stephan- East
Sir Konrad von Ulm- East
Duke Davin- An Tir
Duke Logan- Atlantia
Duke Lucan- East
Duke Brannos- Middle
Duke Uthyr- West
Duke Jade - West
Duke Icefalcon- East
Yeah- That would be fun.........

Well, since nobody has done a Midrealm team yet - Feel free to correct or update me, I'm only semi-active the last couple of years...
Duke Brannos
Duke Rangvaldr
Duke Edmund
Duke Felix
Duke Palymar (Boy, there's a trend here...)
Sir Dillan
Sir Theodric
Sabah (Gotta put in at least 1 unbelt - and Sabah is scarey in melee)
HRH Bardolph (He is sword and shield in melee, IIRC)
Count Alaric
Thoughts?

"Sir Stephan von Dresden- Simply the best sword and shiled fighter ever.."
I would say top three or so along with Duke Inman (who made me feel stupid when I was at the height of my prowess) and Duke Radnor (who went almost twenty years actively fighting in tourneys without losing any of them and recently winning West kingdom crown with a sword and stick with no thrusting tips).

I agree with Inman. I've very limited experience with Radnor but that would also seem to be a good call.
I'm prejudiced of course but I'd have to put Baldar on that list. I've seen him go against most of the legends and come out on top 90% of the time. Even now that he's been at best a part-time fighter for a decade he's still a wonder to behold.

Syr Fynn,
I would agree with one change, Sir Isenwulf is evil S/S in singles but in melees he's much better with a spear. I would replace him on this list with Sir Otto. Otto is one of the best melee fighters I know period, I've never seen a man go into a unit of six or eight guys alone, leg them all and leave alive.... of course you don't want to take orders from him because he can take ten guys in against twenty and win... but he's the only one to come out alive!

he has the same gift as John the Pell: to be able to take any given rabble, in about 15min., and turn them into a real working unit.

Probably why I didnt have Otto on here, was de, with him having been Warlord for us the last couple of years, he has to do control and command more, so havent had a chance to see him get in the mix as much as he used to be able to, so forgot about him.
But your right, I would definetly have Otto on there.
Thanks for the point.

What i would give to see Duke Inman vs Sir Stephan ...
Duke Inman is a legend here in ansteorra ... I just started playing about 3 years ago and have only heard the stories about him. I have never seen him actually fight. But from those stories his prowess was unmatched.
Sir Stephan has the same reputation out here ... ive only heard stories about him ... but if you ask the question ... "who is the best" his name always comes up in the conversation.
