This not-for-profit tournament will feature authentic, mounted and unmounted Western Martial Arts, performed in a competitive atmosphere of martial brotherhood and sisterhood.

It is the first event of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US. We sincerely intend this to be the first of many such events in years to come.

Participants please aim for late15thC thru late16C. We are aiming for a 'periodesque' look and feel from in between King Rene's Book to The Field of the Cloth of Gold. (1450s to 1520s) Elizabethan armor/garb is expressly welcome, as most folk don't know the difference. :D (terminus: 1600ad)

Itinerary:
600am - horse trailers may arrive
800am - site opens, morning coffee clutch
1100am - meeting for all the day's combatants (mandatory)
1200pm - Promenade (all combatants and retinue march formally and are acknowledged (soft kit))
1230pm - SCA-style Grand Melee (30 minuted of continuous martial madness and mayhem - all available on-site combatants are invited to play!)
130pm - Mounted Tournament (1"x40" rattan canes vs crested helms (paper mache crests))
2pm - Cane Ground Combat (one minute rounds ala Sir Brand of the West, judged like a boxing match, SCA armour/weapons)
245pm - Jousting round 1 (scored 3' balsas at wooden targes or smooth grande-garde augment (buffe optional))
315pm - Ultra Heavy Steel sword submission combat (3-5 counted blows, no holds barred, cap-a-pie harness -w- matched steel bastard swords)
430pm - Jousting round 2 (solid 3' balsas, no targes (bare-chested) unhorsings +10pts)
500pm - Jousting laissez-faire (championship tie-breakers come first, after that anything goes,
aka 'free style', i.e. WCJA lances, personal challenges, reverse or right-shoulder passes, etc.)
600pm - Awards, prizes, closing promenade
7pm - cookout for combatants and crew (onsite campground)
8pm - tippling and NSTIW debriefing (onsite campground)

FRIDAY MARCH 7th - ALL JOUSTERS MUST MAKE 4 SHOCK QUINTAIN PASSES ON THEIR INTENDED WARHORSE (no exceptions)

SUNDAY MARCH 9th: Skill-at-Arms day; private farm in Harwood, MD (non-combat weapon/target gaming)-(4 mi from tournoi site)

We will happily go out of our way to accomodate horses brought from out-of-town. Proof of coggins&vaccines required.

Saddle plates are highly advisable.

King of Arms: All Rulings, Judgements, Prouncements, Admonshiments, Banishments and other such made by the King of Arms are considered Final. Arguments, appeals, lawyerings, badgerings or other styles of naughty, sassy back-talk will get the perpetrator ejected.

Open Arms Policy: to all the goodly citizens of SCA, Dagorhir, MSR/Acre, Adrian Empire, Markland, Belegarth, WMA studios and other history-minded folk.

Attendees with period garb and encampments may set up around the list field.

Spectator tickets will be $10 with under 12 free, available soon through Ticketmaster.
Participants: $5
Crew: Free, of course

FWIW - We are only using the outdoor portion of this magnificent facility for this event. Someday we hope to be able to afford to rent out the whole thing for our productions. There is also a CAMPGROUND right ON-SITE!

Umm, how come when I click the link there is no information listed about this event on the web site?

Is it still happening or has it been cancelled?

How much are tickets?

If you are participating in the SCA style Grand Melee portion is there a change in ticket prices? Also who would we contact for this portion?

After the big flush, I tried to find info on this by googling various jousting / tounament / wma information combos. I couldn't find out anything about this anywhere else. There still isn't anything about it on the equestrian site schedule. You guys need to do something about advertising.

Thanks for the good advice. Marketing requires money. Maybe we will have some for that next time.

We have THIS by now, and much more in the works.

The arena will have a beer&munchie stand open. Not sure exactly what's on the menu yet...I do know that Coke and Budweiser are two of the vendors. :D

Here is the official printable brochure, hot off the web presses. 8)

I just want to clarify something.

For the SCA style melee, all authorized combatants are allowed regardless of the time period of their armour. Is this correct?

Posted: Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:41 am
by Jonny Deuteronomy
Aye. Correct.
IIRC, use of earlier period-style armours and togs for (one-off) tourney events in the late Medeival and Renaissance period is a well-documented practice.
Within the context of this tourney, you are considered to be fighting in a 'costume'.

Someday I want to reproduce a joust that recreates one of the really, really elaborate themed pageants produced by Queen Elizabeth I and Inigo Jones. It's going to take a serious budget, just like then. IIRC it plays sorta like a "Cirque du WMA" (copyright2008KTPallrightsreserved) with impresas and floats and pretty speeches and such like. Far more of a public spectacle than a fight club. (Perhaps Spenser's 'Faerie Queen' for a theme...hmm...)

So far, it looks like I'll be there. Life is smacking me around like an Uber Duke in the finals for crown...and for some reason I can't fall down or say "GOOD!!". :( But it's on my calendar.

Planning on it. Don't know how many I will bring though.

Care Tascie,

If I may suggest, let's tell whoever comes to practice tomorrow. Maybe we can make it our first group outing. I need to check with the Praetora at home to ensure there is no conflict that can threaten my life.
I'll even break out the helm plumes I was saving for Pennsic. They may fit better here....

I'll be there in my new rig for the melee (that is if my ride can get out of bed before noon on a Saturday).

I'll post some pics of me when I can.

When I'm not fighting, I can do some heraldry work. I'm quite loud when I want to be, and well known for embellishing to the point of embarassment when being a herald.

Thank you Trystan.

While I cannot be there this weekend... I would like to know about other such events. Keep us in the loop on how this one goes and when others get planned.

I hear you, oh friend Trystan. Unfortunately, you chose the day before Gulf Wars for this event, and I plan to be on the road to Mississippi early that morning. If it had been any other weekend (except for next weekend, of course, when I'll be coming BACK from Mississippi), I would've been happy to attend.

If my plans change, I will gladly show up, because it sounds like a hell of a show and I wish you and all the participants the best. So count me as unlikely, but who knows?

The irony never ceases. When I booked this, I looked at the online schedules for the SCA, Markland and Dagorhir. As they all stood 6 or 8 months ago, there were no conflicts I could discern.
Huge wars in Mississippi never entered my thinking. Drat. Shucks. :?

Next year I will book it for after Gulf Wars. :) 2 weeks later should do it.

If they get Half-Orc on a horse again please be sure and capture the magic for posterity.

On a more serious note, please try to photograph any mounted combat or other indescribably cool equestrian stuff they do. Please!!!
You have enough heavy fight pics to wallpaper the Great Wall of China already - so please don't make me beg.

When I get back from Ohio I will check into my production gear. It should still be working but I don't get to use it much anymore. If so I will bring to the event and tape.

8) much like Ursus, you are the kind of friend people brag about.

My goal is to chop it all into something suitable enough to take to Spike TV in April. We would love to be the opening act for the UFC.

We WANT WMA in the Olympics and we want it NOW.
They have much dumber shite than this in there already.
We're talkin' 'bout our heritage here. :D

UPDATE: Next Year's Grand Champion will be decided by combining points won in a 2-day day travail of both ground and mounted combat. (both melee [warlord tourney and crested helm behourd] and singles [at barrier and at tilt] in both styles) ALL WITH STEEL WEAPONS (except same blunted au plaisance lances as now).

It will be set up so that the winner of either type will still not garner enough points for a grand championship without doing both.

IIRC, that is a first for a North American WMA Tournament. (end zone dancing)

UPDATE: Emergency order from Brian Price at www.Revival.us was beyond my best expectations. KTP wholeheartedly endorses Revival for all your periode clothinge and accoutremente goodeness.
