I think the 3 blows convention will likely continue, it is the easiest, most playable answer I have heard.

I just had a thought, that I'd like to hear some input on.

The original couple 30's were fought to elimination, with the only way to re-enter the field after capture was if your captor were to be killed. I liked that format, and it kept the ransoms from becoming a huge issue.

The actual COTT in 1351 had a break for refreshment in the middle of it.

What if we fight it in 2 segments, with a break at a set point (not timed, but based on side numbers or something similar) At the break, those who have been captured may offer up a ransom for entry into the second half and continue if they so desire. Captor death is still grounds for immediate re-entry, but after the first session ransoms are paid, they are paid.

No one would need more than 2 ransoms, the fight would last longer, and we could have a bit more time with our teams.

As a captain, I would probably discourage fraternization with the enemy at the break except for ransom payment, so we could change our plan if necessary (and get our man on the horse ready)...

As much as I'd like it to last longer I think we'd be best off going with the original rules. If folks want more fighting the pickup field is right there and we could arrange impromptu challenges following the 30. I'm afraid a planned break would stop the momentum and taker us further away from capturing the original. Remember they took a break because they couldn't go on without one.

to me a newbie the original rules sound fantastic, except the no one handed weapons...a mace in period would shake your bucket enough to make you not want to continue much longer after 3 hefty hits, any way we can keep atleast 1handed maces in?

I don't know, the year Leo killed me my reaction was "Thank You" because I had gotten tired enough I was killing people simply to not have to face them any more. A break would have refreshed me enough to go more. But then I would have missed the experience of being tired enough not to be interested in ransom... 8)

In my measly opinion a break sounds like a good idea, maybe not a planned one, possible when we all get really tired we break together? Those that arent as tired as the majority, well they will have an upperhand after resting a little.

Just a few quick interjections.

Because I am sworn brother to both Captains, they must duel before the Deed for my services. I care not for the fortune of the Plantagents or the Valois.

This fight must be with weapon and shield. The shields must be small- very small. No basket hilts. No bucklers. Single-handed mace, axe or sword is allowed. The fight shall be to three good blows. No visible edging on the shields. Shields must have guige straps.

There were shields at the original Thirty- read the verse accounts.

Back to pumping out my cellar.

Hence why I wanted them allowed last COTT.

And make sure it's the appropriate tapestry ;)

the original COTT was happened in 1351 but from what I've seen video and photo wise of the SCA version it is mid to late 14th century.

Steve,

The original COTT was in 1351, but since the preponderance of 14th century folks congregate in the 1380's, the Pennsic happening has that flair. In recent years, however, some of us have been moving our gear backwards to better represent mid century and fit the 1351 date. Last year I changed my helmet from 1385 to 1340, and my body armour was from Wisby and representative of 1340ish knightly effigies. This year I will be changing my leg harness to that era as well.

So, as long as you have good gear from the 14th C., you can get in, the better you look, the better IT looks.

Well I'm building a Germanic kit last half of 14th century. Klappvisor basinet, splinted arms and legs, coat of plates.

I am still in ransome to Sir Johannes and if he would belabour another scottsman on his team I would be there as well weilding poleaxe or sword and warsword as needed. After the bout is settle I would present my end ransome from this prior years bout as well as hopefully earn my renown well enough to be granted his excellencies leave to exit the field without dishonour.

Shields at the 30

I am curious, what size/shape of shield do you think would be appropriate?

I had such a good time last year, I do not really care what weapons are used, but allowing shields would probably make the engagement last longer.

And I'm guessing shield edging is a no no :P ? How would I go about rounding the edge of a shield so its legal? How thick does it need to be to do that?

After seeing Strongbow's shield I'd love to get one of Sir Vitus's shields, but financial situations at the moment won't allow it. Maybe when summer comes. Same rawhide chew toys are made of...

I love this fight so much I decided that my armor and accoutraments would be FROM that battle.

So, 1351 it is. 1401 minus 50.
