Authorization question (moved)

I originally posted this to Classifieds. I don't know why I did that. So, I deleted it and moved it here.

I know that we have done this to death, but what questions do you ask when you are questioning an authorizing fighter?

personally....

Have you read and do you understand the rules of the list and
the conventions of combat of the SCA and ( whatever Kingdom
you are in )?

Are you aware that this is a potentially dangerous sport and you
could be hurt?

Do you bear any offensive steel?

Have you been inspected and did your armor pass inspection?
Is this your armor or loaner armor? Does it fit correctly?

Do you have any questions?

Are you ready?

My questions were usually.

Have you read the rules of the list?

What are legal targets?

How much force do you use with a face thrust?

How much force for thrusts to other parts of the body?

Are cup shots legal?

Those were my standards for authorizing fighters.

Inital auth:

- Have you read the rules?

- Do you have any questions on them?

- What is min armour standard (parts protected, not tech details of helms, etc)?

- What is legal target area?

- What do you do when you receive a telling blow?

- What do you do when you hear someone call "hold"?

Then the fighting part of the auth.

- What is engagement? (This is usually more of me explaining engagement).

- Do you understand "shield bashing" and "shield manipulation"?
- The "loose with honor" v. 'empty victory' chat.

and finally...

- If God is love, and love is blind, and Stevie Wonder is blind, is Stevie Wonder God, and if so, could 'He make an object so heavy that even 'He could not lift it?

What is your name?

What is your quest?

What is your favorite color?

(Had to be done, no sleep from playing AoC)

Hi!

I usually go for

- Target areas and hit outcome (including the difference regarding swords and mass weapons on hips)

- What areas need armour? (I usually ask for padding thickness, but don't make this a "killer")

- What do you have to keep in mind when building a new sword? (diameter, thrusting tip requirements, lanyard/trigger, marked edge etc.)

- How do you do a "kill from behind" and/or "kill on the ground"?

- How do you kill an archer? ("fast" or "with joy" are correct but insufficient answers  ) - then I have the candiate show me a 3m range

- What are ok things to do with your shield? What are the shield no-no's?

- Someone calls a hold - what do you do?

- When are you engaged with someone? (including longer weapons, units etc.)

That would be the core things. I tend to ask more if I feel uncertainty.

Cheers,
William

Have you read the rules of the list?

Has your armor and weapon been inspected?

After that if they answered yes and have a dance partner lets get this thing done.

This really isnt rocket surgery you know. :P

I was asked:

What is the minimum armour?
Can you hit someone on the ground?
When can you strike someone who is fighting your buddy?
What happens in a tournament if you lose your sword?
What happens in a melee if you lose your sword?
What do you do if you are behind someone and they are approaching a hazard whilst fighting someone else?
How do you die?
What do you do if someone shouts hold?

and I fought ... or at least I tried to I was sooooooo tired from the battle!

Yup, so that makes it an even better question. Lots of folks are still confused.

I also often ask some combination of:

- which parts of your body must you armour?
- where must your armour be padded?
- where do you need rigid armour?
- this guy has not seen you. Now show me all the ways you might legally kill him.
- when should you call hold? (Acceptable answer for new guys here is "whenever I am worried about a safety issue")
- am I the best looking marshal you ever saw? (this would be a trick question if Freiman asked it...)

- oh, and "die safely".

I had to fight Duke Gareth

who was the king at the time

and the Marshal was the KEM.

Needless to say, i was a scoch nervous being a tiny newbie at the time.

I fought for like 45 seconds and then answered a few basic questions about the rules and i was good.

"How do you kill an archer"?....Answer: "slowly and with great pleasure" or "Kill? where I'm from, we rape and release!"
