The following was recently posted on the Artemisia general newsgroup.
Posted at the request of Their Majesties, this missive will also be in
the Sage Advice.

==================================================================

Unto Our most noble subjects of Artemisia, hear the words of Reinmar and Albreda 22nd King and Queen of the Kingdom of Artemisia.

We Reinmar and Albreda send Our warmest greetings unto you all.

Eleven years ago, Artemisia was a new and young Kingdom. As We left our Father Kingdom of Atenveldt, We stumbled as We learned to stand on Our own. Atenveldt came to Us, as a Father would, and helped Us to Our feet, by allowing Us to become a Principal Kingdom at Estrella War. It has
been Our honor to have been invited back to participate as a Principal
at Estrella ten more times. We are forever grateful to Atenveldt for
Their continued trust and support, and by the deep Honor They have
bestowed upon Us in the past.

So too are We forever grateful to the Kingdoms of Caid and the Outlands
for standing beside Us on the field of war as allies and brothers in
arms. In this time, strong bonds of friendship and fraternity have
grown. So strong that not even the heavy sword of war could sever them.
We are forever thankful to both Our Cousin Kingdoms.

Being a Principal Kingdom at Estrella is a great pleasure. But it is
also a great burden and responsibility.

Therefore We Reinmar and Albreda, King and Queen of all
Artemisia, do hereby withdraw Our acceptance of the invitation to be a
Principal Kingdom of Estrella War for 2009.

Loyal Nobles of Our realm, know We do not take this action lightly. Nor
do We do this with disdain or anger in Our hearts. Nor do we seek to
admonish. Rather, We do what We must for the good of our Own Kingdom. Indeed, it is well known that Artemisia struggles each year to perform the tasks expected of a Principal in good standing. Artemisia wishes not to become more a liability than a welcome friend. This we cannot abide.

We hope for the best in the upcoming War, and know All that We will
attend Estrella War. Not as a Principal, but hopefully as an allied
Kingdom, and brother in arms to all.

Done by Our hand on the 10th day of July, AS 43 being 2008

CHANGE IN ESTRELLA WAR XXV PRINCIPAL KINGDOMS

TRM Phelan and Amirah, King and Queen of Atenveldt, announced today that TRM Reinmar and Albreda, King and Queen of Artemisia, have notified Them that the Kingdom of Artemisia will withdraw as a Principal Kingdom for Estrella War XXV (Feb 9-16, 2009). In several cordial phone and email communications, TRM of Artemisia explained that Their decision is based on Artemisia's concerns that rising costs and the state of the local economy have made it increasingly difficult for Artemisia to perform the tasks expected of a Principal Kingdom in good standing.

TRM Reinmar and Albreda continued by saying "We are forever grateful to
Atenveldt for their continued trust and support, and by the deep Honor they have bestowed upon Us in the past. So too are we forever Grateful to the Kingdoms of the Caid and the Outlands for standing beside us on the field of war as allies and brothers in arms. In this time, strong bonds of friendship and fraternity have grown. So strong that not even the heavy sword of war could sever them." TRM of Artemisia continued by stating, "We hope for the best in the upcoming War, and know all that We will attend Estrella War. Not as a Principal, but hopefully as an allied Kingdom, and brother in arms to all."

TRM Phelan and Amirah asked that this following message be delivered to the Populace of the Kingdom of Artemisia: "We have a deep respect for the Kingdom of Artemisia, and the bonds of friendship your presence brings to the war every year. As an Estrella War Principal Kingdom for over 10 years, Your Kingdom has made countless contributions to the ongoing success of Estrella War. Know that the Populace of Artemisia are forever welcome on the fields of Estrella War as valued allies or respected adversaries, for the bonds between Our Kingdoms extend back many years."

WOW! That's a big change for one such as myself, who in my 11 years of playing in the SCA have lived in 3 different kingdoms, all of which were traditional principal kingdoms for Estrella. Which kingdom do you think will step up and fill the vacancy?

I'm guessing the West ... but with the 3 principals of Atenveldt, Caid, and Outlands still intact Estrella will be a great time. It always is :)

Yeah, I'm sure I'll have a blast. It'll just be odd going to Estrella from an allied Kingdom instead of a principal kingdom.

I've never been. I hope to go next year. My Lady's family has a time share about 10 minutes from the site.
With a hot tub.

So, the SITE is not moving, right?

Everything should be about the same at the war, really. My first worry is the possible loss of volunteers and lower attendance, but the worries are probably unfounded.

Things are apparently afoot with the current treaty negotiations. The populace in Caid is being asked for input by TRM Edward and Mora regarding some aspects of the proposed treaty, which may effect Caid participating as a Principal as well.

Nothing set in stone yet...

Anyone have an idea what? The preemptive denial of admonishment made me wonder a little bit, that makes me wonder more. Especially since treaty negotiations haven't begun yet AFAIK.

If you preemptively deny, people accuse you of being defensive. If you don't say anything, they wildly speculate. What's a kingdom to do?

I would say that this is less likely to hurt attendance then the economy as a whole.

Why do you need 4 principals?

Yeah, well, that's one of the bones of contention. They have started, without any of the Heirs who will be sitting in February even selected yet. Caid won't have Fall Crown until the middle of next month. Treaty negotiations are usually in October.

Basically, it is about how much input the Principal Kingdoms will have into the conduct of the War, and the rules under which it is contested.

I understand that. The thought that crossed my mind when I read it, passed on fairly quickly, as I decided to take it at face value. The post about Caid makes me wonder at least what's going on with Caid.
