Ok, yeah, I know it's early, and ok, yeah, I looked at the website, but I'm thinking about going to Gulf Wars 2009. Years ago I went a couple of times, when the event was smaller and shorter. So now I have couple of questions for more recent attendees:

1. How much is the gate fee? The website does not seem to have that info.

2. How much camping equipment should I bring? I know the cabin are reserved.

3. Is any body from the East thinking about going? It's if I remember corrected, it's pretty much a 24 hour drive.

gate fee is about $40 per person, for the week.

Camping, it is a war. I consider it camping like Pennsic....with less room.
Seriously, depending on where you camp you may want to not bring the sprawling bedowen shade fly. You may not get the room to set it up.

Well, like Pennsic, you CAN register ghosts for more sq feet.

I know that the East always has a contingent there. Ice Falcon and some of his guys are always there as well as others. I don't recall the last time there wasn't an EK royal presence.

I suppose you CAN register for more square feet but there's no need. I have yet to see anybody run out of room.

Mord, my Shire (Rosenfeld/Ansteorrea) has its own permanent space. You're more than welcome to join us, we usually have plenty oif room. That said, be sure to bring a wagon if you do, because we're on the far end of the campsite!

EK camps across from Trimaris, space ~can~ become an issue if folks are silly about how camps are set up. if you think for a few minutes and set up wit the thought in mind that other folks need space as well, there is no issue in that area.

We are about 200 yards from the merchants?
400 from the field
maybe 600 from the chowhall.

The bathrooms suck. the showers are ok at best.

BTW if you decide to come down, bring cheesesteaks and pretzels. I'll pay you.

Gate is usually in the range of $40-45 for the week and reservation info seems to go up around November. There has been a East presence for the last few years I know, I seem to find them across from me in the Ravine Battle on a regular basis.

As for camping equipment, it is a week long event. Bring what you'd need for that. You are allotted 225 sq ft per reservation, if I recall correctly. The showers range from decent to horrid and the bathrooms are bad, use the portas.

Not from the East, but I'll be there.

Hey Mord, Elglin (who is always at thursday practice) goes every year. He for a small price can bring down some things for you in his trailer or you may even be able to jump in and take the ride with him and his wife.
next thursday you run into him, bring up GW. I know its his favorite war.

Well it's about time for me to wander back down again ... if it would get you and Sir Mord to wander down, I'd make sure the PFC (Pentamere Free Company) pavilion is up and running at least on the edge of the battlefield and have a decent hotel within' reasonable driving distance nearby (mainly for shower and flushy capacity) to backup any period style encampments on site. Hmm suppose it's time to start doing the research/plaining for the SE Pentamere crew coming down for all the fun this year .... Remember period style gambling done all the time in the Free Companies pavilion and if we have the avarice banner flying during courts often being discreetly done there as well!

Honestly, there has not be a "Gulf Wash" for many years. Granted you can bet that is WILL rain at least once during the week, but the ground is so sandy that it soaks up and runs off almost immediately. Really, as long as you plan garb accordingly, and trench your tent, you will be fine.

I'm thinking of taking Amtrak.

Pros:

--I won't have to drive.
--Rail is convenient to my apt.
--Most of my luggage can go with me.
--I don't have to go thru an airport.
--I can read/work for a bit in transit.

Cons:

--Amtrak's werid ticket pricing policies: always depend upon an increase.
--It's a 26 hour trip.
--Sleeping (bring an extra pillow)
--The food is expensive and it pretty much sux (bring snacks).
--Amtrak outside of the Eastern shuttle corridor can be very slow.
--Someone will have to pick me up/drop me off in Hattiesburg.

Yes, all of this requires pre-planning. As for the rain: I've been to Pennsic multiple times. Liquid sunshine is expected.

I am hoping to get back into SCA fighting this winter, and I live in Philadelphia. As I have never been to a large SCA event (though I have been to several large-scale week-long fighting events), attending Gulf Wars as a relative newcomer would be a hefty proposition, but it falls during the first week of my March vacation (I am a teacher) and if I save my energy and money I should be able to pull it off. I hope to find the time to show up at a Bhakail practice in the next few weeks, even though I don't have all my gear in my new place yet, and start coming regularly after Thanksgiving.

It would be great to be able to head down to this event and not be on my own.

Well, I am planning on going, though I expect to fly down...and I might be able to help you with the cabin thing, if you'd rather not camp. Just sayin'.

Oh if you two could attend it would indeed be a grand and glorious time! With the Challenges and Murdock & Mord attending I'd be a very happy man.

Is there space for motor homes, I have often thought of stuffing a friends large class C motorhome full of Priory members and making the trip down.
I would still throw up a barracks tent.

RV's

All RV registrations will be handled by King’s Arrow Ranch. There are 20 available units with electricity, water and sewer and are priced at $80.00 for the week. Please contact the King’s Arrow Motel at 1-800-215-9929 to reserve these spaces. Unless you have reserved in advance with King’s Arrow Ranch, you will not have access to these amenities.

Reserving a RV space with Kings Arrow Ranch does NOT include admission to the war. You must still register for the war as always.

You must notify the RV Crat if you plan to run a generator. RVs which run generators must park in a specifically designated area near the main gate.

RVs will be allowed to enter the site Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm. When entering the site, all RVs must stop at the Land Tent for instructions. RV's will only be allowed to park in RV parking in a space designated by the RV Crat on duty. RV parking is on a first-come, first served basis.

Yes Adam, they have RV spots available.

If a spot is open in the "30" I would be honored to attend, I would prefer the English as Germans fought for them.

You're quite right about the soil soaking it up. Even in the last big wash I remember where it rained several days (and destroyed my brand new tent, but that's because for a $300 tent it was surprisingly crap) straight once it finally stopped the ground dried out fairly quickly.

Valerius and I are going to try to get down this year, if we can manage it between his busy work schedule and my lack of vacation days (well, I have vacation days, but they have to get awefully spread out to do Pennsic and such too).
