The Armour Archive

This is a multistep process:
1. Redesign my leather scale hauberk. Right now, too much of the weight is on my shoulders. I want to change the "lines" of it as well, to have it evoke a "classical" or Byzantine feel like some of the statuary of Goliath in Rheims cathedral
2. Byzantine style pauldrons.
3. Greaves
4. Spangenhelm or fluted round top helm with camail
5. New shield edging
6. New sword baskets
7. Better looking demis
8. Footwear-turnshoes, low boots, something more period than my officer's boots or moccasins

We will see what time and money allow, but here is my goal:

Gambeson to replace evil blue camp foam
Strap and attach new vambraces
Replace kidney belt with COP
Something to wear under it all
Make a new less obtrusive gorget
Order new helm from hjalmr done
Buy or make aventail for new helm
Replace garden hose with raw-hide shield edging done
Figure something else out for my legs done
New shoes done
Get an extra job to pay for everything

Soft kit needs a few necessities -

V-necked doublet
Hats (acorn and chaparone)
Riding boots
Poulaines
Belt
Purse with fittings
Odds and ends - feast gear, for example


Hard kit -

Taking delivery very shortly of a sallet and bevor
Mail bits from Erik - standard, skirt, gussets
Need to sort out the brig
Proper scabbard rig for the Sempach, Brescia, and Soldat
Rondel

Soft Kit:
Finish the supertunic- which is a matter now of felling the seams and facing it, then trying my hand at embroidery.
Make a new tunic from the wool I have.
Work out how to do footed hose, do them. I have the wool, again.
Try to use scrap edge from the tunic wool for winnegas?

Obtain leather, practice, make puches, eventually turnshoes. I bought a beautiful leatherworking halfmoon knife, but I'll had so little chance to use it.

Hard kit:
Fix chainmail. It's butted and has half fallen apart.
New, more period helmet.

Not necessarily in order of importance or accomplishment:

1: Turn shoes for soft-kit.
2: Replace my steel bazubands with hidden arms.
3: Make a tunic with trim to use for events.
4: Go to events.

Soft kit -

A couple new leine
Spiff up my current leine with trim, embrodery or beadwork

New pouch, accessories that my persona would have had on him.

Camp / field kit -

New small tent / fly for day camp.
Benches / chests for seating and storage
Hide modern stuff (Bottle, icechests, etc...)
New banner

Be able to do at least one event with no visible modern stuff!

Kit:
Just acquired some finger gauntlets to help minimize the SCAisms in my kit - other than the rattan and the grill on my helm, I've almost gottern rid of this stuff.
Need to acquire a helm that is proper for my period - mine is uber-pretty and was passed to me by my Knight, but I want to have a proper kit, cuz, well ya'll know.
Re-work my weapons.
Acquire a proper riveted mail hauberk.
Get some proper linen and wool garments; using linen-looks and wool-looking materials now, but want the real thing.
Get a new long bow, and good wooden arrows with proper tips, and then next fall, in garb, using said long bow and arrows, kill a deer.

Camp:
Bed
Rowing benches/chests
Hide mundane stuff

Persona:
Continue work on my poetry (skaldic verse). Now that I THINK I have a clue, I'd like to actually get good. And write more of it. And perform it more.

Other:
Continue to improve the appearance of my kid's kits, and actually get them to events to fight (they spend a ton of time at grandparents during the summer... Might have to have some pre-summer negotiations for time...).

Mine is easy,

1. LOOSE WEIGHT!!!
2. Get new fighting garb
3. Figure out which of my shields I really want to fight with and stick with it for a while
4. LOOSE WEIGHT!!!

Hard kit:
1: Set up low-profile, hidden leg armor
2: Make a new Jack of plates, ideally linen with wool padding (This will depend on finances)
3: Make shirts and breeches for my fighting kit.

Soft kit:

1: More shirts and breeches
2: Make a doublet.

Mostly I need to keep working on my husband's and daughter's kits.

But for myself:

The lamellar needs restringing and parts of it are broken, (been in service since '88 or so, so it doesn't owe me anything). Contemplating doing a mix of materials - metal in front, rawhide behind - rather than all rawhide.

Redo shoulder and upper arm to be more byzantine-influenced appropriate.

The improvements I make on my kit will be in direct proportion to my income.

Well...

Considering the economy, I'm being dumb. Here's the plan:

* Replace gambeson. Get one in green and gold for War, one in black with my arms for tourney, keep remaining one for practice
* Replace arms with Cet chartres arms
* Replace legs with Cet spring steel legs
* Replace grille on the bascinet
* Put my pauldrons back on

Already replaced the chain on the bascinet that was anviled apart on the edges

Second kit (flight kit)

* Get helm from Brand
* Stealth leg armour
* Fasteners on lamellar

Third kit (for my actual persona)

* Elizabethan buff coat, pocketed armour
* Chin strap in Clang burgonet
* Stealth legs, as above

It's not all gonna happen in '09. :)

New plastic knees (hidden, of course) so I can wear my spiffy boots (shovel greaves don't fit over them very well)
replace metacarpal plate and wrist protection on left gauntlet
polish gauntlets (more than once)

Soft kit:
carve/cast belt plaques
New pants
persona-appropriate belt pouch
persona-appropriate accessories (eating utensils, flint and striker)
Attempt to create persona-appropriate coinage

Lets see... for 2009

Get my life back together so I can fight at practice and go to at least one event per month or able to go to Gulf War in 09.

Get my name authorized and get my Coat of Arms done as well.

Soft Kit. I want to get or make three tunics, one of them a fighting tunic and my war tunic done. Three new pairs of pants and some wrap leggings.

Armor:

Scale shirt done, just want to make a small brass or bronze backplate with design to finish it completely up.

Redo shield and make it look nice and have my Arms on my Shield so I can be recognized.

New arms, will be going with hidden arms because I cant find any documentation on 4th AD Roman wore on his arms and Manica is to far stretching. Simple splinted arms with elbow cop edge lined with leather made of spring steel as well as the splints.

Gauntlets: Make some low profile, well protective spring steel gauntlets so I can have a sword of rattan that looks more like a sword as well as throw javelins and try out shield and spear for fun.

Weapons: Make a rattan Spatha Sword, Javiliens and a one handed spear for fun.

New Helm: I have a nice helm, I am just tired of banging out dents every 6 months or so. I have no problem buffing and oiling the Mild helm, just the bloody dents. So I have in mind making a spring stainless roman helm maybe out of 410 and have the sucker heat treated and getting a super spiff bar grill design that I have in my head. Basically finishing my kit completely to my specifications.

14th Century Kit:

If I have time which is unlikely I want to make a 14th Kit so I can play alongside with my knight. Something basically simple and a standard man at arms. I will make a COP, standard arms and legs. I am not exactly sure what I will do for the helm but I will more than likely buy one.

Well have worn the helm once, 2 weeks ago, but most wont see it till next year. The greaves and shoulders I got yesterday. All of this is from Shamrock Armory. Does great stuff.

Other than that, I am thinking of having made some Ptergues to wear under my lamellar, and need to come up with something for a gorget, for the new helm, since my old one messes with it.

If I could find hand protection, that I actually trusted, I would go to gauntlets and ponnel and hilted swords. But I havent found a set of gauntlets I trust my hands totally to. I have a pair that I use for great sword and polearm. But I fight those off and on. If i am going to fight full time with gauntlets, I am not sure, how they would do. Plus they are just a set from Bokalos, so they work great, but would look as much out of place as a basket.

Hmm lets see..

Hmmm...well step one will be to re-size the armour. Having lost 45lbs this fall its a bit baggy around the middle....

After that to get back to training to fight on a regular basis. That's the two major improvements to my kit at this point in the year.

I've got the fabric and raw materials for most of the 16th century stuff, but the 15th century stuff is up in the air. I work pretty quickly when I have time, so though this will all likely extend well into the future, it shouldn't be too bad.

Get new steel mastery gambeson integrated into kit as new foundation garment.

Replace aluminum spaulders with spring steel - in progress. Finished dishing them last night. Holiday vacation time rocks for armouring.

Replace cuisses on the legs I made. Current ones don't fit properly.

Finish 5pc spring elbows. One down, one to go. Cop for the 2nd one is raised.

Make 032 spring vambraces. Made an 040 and didn't like the fit/weight. A little lighter, and shape the narrow part of the tulip less. I exaggerated the shape on my first go and it's uncomfortable. Too small too. The steel mastery gambeson is rather thick.

Make a decent Churburg #13 out of spring, and replace aluminum churburg-ish thing I'm currently wearing. And eventually replace that with a corrazina. The corrazina is beyond my skill set at the moment though. I'll need to think about that one a bit first. So that's a later project.

Hide some hip protection in my gambeson.

Finish my shield from Icefalcon. Cover it with canvas, paint it properly. And I have a wicked idea for a shield basket I'm dying to try. I'll post pictures if it doesn't suck.

Make a decent spring half gauntlet, using the shrinking technique Eric Dube did in his 15th C. Italian Gauntlet video. Looking forward to this project the most. Eric makes everything look fun.

Gotta go to the bank, get a role of nickels....

Seriously, fix arms on hauberk. finish gambison, make thigh armour.

My goal for 2009 is to finish my tudor joust suit.

Yes, I know stainless isn't period.
I intend to put this rig, some horses, and some friends to some good hard use in 2009.
It also has half greaves but I hate riding in them.

I would like to finally, finally stop mooning about and get started on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/baronalejandro/2338680513/">a set of japanese armour</a>. I'm especially motivated on this after seeing Halvgrimr's <a href="http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=90078">very nice armour</a> in person. It truly is on the way to being a magnificent armour.


However, it can reasonably be assured that me making Japanese armour will result in one or more panicked phone calls to Effingham!

Just got a new brig finished up to go with my 15th century kit. Next up are a pair of Gothic arms and shoulders, complete with some nice big couters! Later on down the line I'll be replacing my legs and greaves.

For the current kit:
* Rebuild the current lamellar kit and replace all broken paper plates - with hardened leather.
* Make a hex-plate and maille (not sure of proper term) camail for my helm.
* Finish my hidden arms. (low profile articulated and some hardened / splinted vambraces.
* Make a decent gambeson for the kit

For the upcoming star-scale kit:
* Finish forming all the scales
* Get them polished and lacquered
* Set up the leather base for the scale
* Get it all assembled in time for tournament season.

Soft kit / garb
* Make suitable Turkish outfit for my daughter.
* New cloak for me (winter weight, already have summer / light cloak)
* Aforementioned gambeson

This picture is my goal. I have the sabatons done, and one of the greaves is shaped. The rest of the legs should be easier, and I can get away with the body armour and helm I presently have. There's definitely room for improvement in both, but they're OK.

I like your goals. I need to iron out an arm harness design which goes under fabric, and we can use most of that design for you. I'm looking to do a 2 piece solid spring vambrace which will be lighter than a splinted design, and lower profile. The only real differences between the designs we'd want are the sizes and the exact shape of the cops.

Well, I just ordered maille, so step 1 is get it, fight in it, and figure out/adjust what I'm wearing underneath it. Second, finish my new shield. Third, a surcoat with the badge of my House. Fourth, a new helm (kettle, preferably with a maille aventail).

These are the first steps in a complete overhaul of my kit, so after all of the above I'll start to look at legs, arms, etc... (which are all fairly unobtrusive leather right now). Will have to look to weapons too, at some point, although making combat arrows look remotely period seems damned near impossible.

- Relace my lamellar to make it fit as it should, not like a body bracelet
- Replace arms and leg to hidden or appropriate shown armour
- Hang some chain from my helm
- Add leather scallops with possibly some brass or steel placards
- Order some crash pads

- research and make/buy an apporpriate hat
