Shield edging question

Ok... given that the vitus shields are legal... and the bucklers with the rolled edges are legal... and I've even seen some folks welding a metal bar around the edges of an aluminum shield, and that's ok...
What if you went crazy and riveted a metal rim to a vitus shield?
Like a big U channel all the way around the edge of the shield?
It would be rounded... theoretically wouldn't damage the rattan any more (probably less) than the rolled edge bucklers...

In my opinion it would be just fine, but won't it add a tremendous amount of weight and make it ugly.

Given that metal shields are on the field I can't imagine how you would argue against a wooden shield with a metal edge, apart from, possibly, an asthetic point of view.

Ask Adam Berry at white mountain armoury. He did several wooden shields with metal channel edging. i recall that he said they were nearly indistructable.

I use the edging material that is a metal channel with a durable plastic cover that looks rather like leather. Theoretically it will stay on by itself, but it gets beaten up and works loose after a time; so I have to use straps or lacing to hold it in place.

My question is purely from the point of view that it will not be covered in anything.
I want to know if a rounded metal edge is ok.

I think this question could have as many answers as people have opinions, and none of them would help you get a good answer.
Your best bet is asking your KEM.
Now, my take on the quesiton.
I have heard of an aluminum heater here on the AA that had a rolled edge that was legal. So if that was legal, your proposal s/b just fine.
My only concern would be mass. An aluminum shield just doesn't have the same amount of mass as a wooden one. My theory is that a wooden shield w/ aluminum tube edging would be more punishing to a rattan weapon (if it is used to punch block) than an aluminum one.
Adam Berry's shields I believe were edged w/ rope as well to give them some cushioning.

I can't see why it would not be legal. It almost certainly would increase the life expectancy of the shield tremendously. I would think that a layer of canvas clamped under the back edge of the rim and glued smoothly across the face of the shield would eliminate any aesthetic objections to "defacing" one of Sir Vitus' shields with such a rim.
My half inch ply wood shield with an aluminum u-channel edge (covered with thin leather) never failed at the edges. The ply did eventually split in several vertical lines running the full length of the shield, but the edges were still intact.
