Hey there! I spent about three years playing in the Midrealm (Cleftlands - Cleveland, OH) before coming back to An Tir in 2003. There are lots of great observations in this thread already, but here's a few more. 
Caveat: my info is about 6 years out of date, and I apologize in advance if things have changed since my time in the Midrealm.
Crown tourney is done very differently. Unlike in the western kingdoms, you cannot simply show up the day of and fight in crown. You must send in a letter of intent before a known deadline. The rules for a given crown can vary. Here are some for a recent one:

I'm not sure if the following happens every time, but it is certainly notable:
Moving on:
There are very few camping events. If you are not willing to travel far, you may only encounter one or two per year. Generally, summer event season is spent preparing for Pennsic, but for some reason that doesn't involve much camping. Shrug.
In a related vein: cities are far apart. Expect to travel a lot if you want to go to events regularly.
You'll probably have almost everyone you meet telling you all about how awesome Pennsic is. Over and over again. They'll tell you horror stories about how it's amazingly different from any other event. In some ways, there is a bit of truth here. It is a huge event, and camping for two weeks, should you choose to do so, does present some challenges. I'd suggest that you listen politely, but don't believe the hype. I have found Pennsic to be a very fun event, especially if you enjoy melee combat and don't take things too horribly seriously. There's certainly tons of really interesting things to do and see.
Calibration-wise, most of the Midrealm hits a bit lighter than West/An-Tir standard. Aethelmearc and the East are similar. Atlantia is about the same as the harder hitting regions of An Tir. Meridies is considerably lighter.

Don, since he's darn near the center of the Mid, he prolly not more than 2½ hours from a camping event every weekend from mid-may to Pennsic and every weekend from Labor Day weekend to mid-October

I am overwhelmed with replies, here and PMs. You humble me with such enthusiastic greetings. The more opportunities I have to interact with the SCA populace (in the West and here on the AA), the more I am reminded how much I love our subculture of geekdom.
I should be out there about May 2nd or 3rd, depending on how quick I make the drive (A drive I have made twice, and I am not looking forward to it again). We will be staying with the inlaws on the NE side of Indy until we can find a place to rent. My first priority will be finding a job that can work around a daycare schedule (hopefully it wont take too long).
I think the only thing I really need help with is finding out who I need to chase down to get my authorizations squared away. One card covers everything out here, but I want to continue fighting polearm so whatever I need signed off for that. Other than that, I don't think getting used to the fighting style and calibration level should be much of a problem for me (I hit a little bit on the light side of good for out here, and I tend to take light too).
Oh, a question about this though... (from the MK combat rules)
Is that only for 1 handed weapons? Or does it include polearms, spears etc.?

All areas of the head except the face and neck are proof against thrust.
Is that only for 1 handed weapons? Or does it include polearms, spears etc.?

The rule covers all forms of thrusts - one and two handed.

Count Alaric is the KEM and Ly. Siban is the Minister of the Lists (issues & tracks auth cards)
My understanding is that you will need to do a simple re-auth, and, unless a major problem is seen, your auths will just be transferred onto a MK card. But contact Ct. Alaric to be sure.
