alrighty i just found a strange foam that i have NO idea what it is:
it looked like Styrofoam. until i stepped on it : it squished , but not like an open cell foam , further manipulation (it felt like pipe insulation) leads me to believe it to be:... i don't know.
so in essence what behaves kinda like pipe insulation, looks like Styrofoam, and yet still came in a cardboard box?
and whatever the f... fork! it is is it be equivilant to pipe insulation to the sca? ( it does feel like it , if not a ,LITTLE tiny bit stiffer)

Could be anything. There are probably as many types of foam used in packing, mats and insulation as there are makes and models of cars ever built.
If you just want to find out if it's open or closed cell foam. Dunk it in water and see if it absorbs it. If it does, then it's open cell. If not, then it's closed cell.
If you want to see if it's suitable for SCA combat, make a thrusting tip out of it, and hand it to a marshal and see what they say. Then if they say it's good...Go out and use it on your friends. Repeat after me...."Stabbity-stabbity" and if they don't complain about it, then it's probably a bit too soft. If they start to cry and wet themselve when you feign a thrust, then it's just perfect.

Sorry Cian, the proper quote ala Quagmire is "Giggidy, giggidy, giggidy!"
Oh right!

My bet is when you put it in water it dissolves. Corn starch

The corn starch peanuts fit the general description.

did the water test :
sorry, but it didn't dissolve!
but on a plus note it doesn't hold water either!!

its probibly a low density closed cell foam. You can find all kinds of intresting foam and foam products with a bit of a search.
Most use industry jargon to confuse just about everyone not in the industry.
There is probibly a secret decoder manual out there just like there is for metals but I am not shure where to find it or what it would be called.

fits the exact characteristics and description of Microcell Foam...it is primarily used in Kayak seats and it's what I make all of my padded weapons with. Awesome stuff and lasts a long time.
