Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
It's all gone a bit quiet lately.
I've digitised maybe a dozen patterns now. Waiting on more, as I'm keen for this project to get off the ground, and not just be one of those flights of fancy which happen all too often.

Hi Dave
I'm planning on takng a bunch of photos later this week (hopefully today) for you to manglificate. I will upload your final versions to http://blog.borealissteel.com/armour-patterns/
I have updated the gauntlet pattern to include the printable pdf - I need to hand code the .DXF links since wordpres has it as an illegal file type. the direct link is:
http://blog.borealissteel.com/wp-conten ... n-2012.pdf
and the whole article can be found here
http://blog.borealissteel.com/armour-pa ... t-pattern/
The updated gorget pattern is here:
http://blog.borealissteel.com/armour-pa ... t-pattern/
Busters (raw) patterns can be found here:
http://blog.borealissteel.com/armour-pa ... -patterns/
but I have not yet uploaded the .pdf versions of them (likely later this week)

JT:
We need a process for adding patterns to the archive.
I have these patterns ready to go:
http://nadler.us/COP.html

http://nadler.us/legs_early_15thC.html
http://nadler.us/arms_early_15thC.html
http://nadler.us/BotN_buckler.html
http://nadler.us/visored_sugarloaf.html
http://nadler.us/sugarloaf.html

Effingham- that sucks. I don't know why it's doing that. Pops up fine for me.
Craig- Those would be the shovel greaves! Took me a few minutes of looking at it to remember exactly what they were.

My offer to volunteer for that task still stands JT. If you don't have the time I could manage it.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
I'm able to Live Trace black and white patterns in Adobe Illustrator and turn that into something that can be cut with a CNC plasma table I have unfettered access to. Or more precisely, people who are better with computers have shown me how to do this at my makerspace in exchange for welding lessons.
I'm working on cleaning up Wisby #7 into a pattern that can be fed into a plasma cutter and cut out. If I'm actually successful at this i'll put it up here. I have the Thordeman books as PDF files, which helps.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
Hello,
I was wondering about this myself. I've got some patterns that I'd like to contribute by way of trying to give back to the site in some small way. I scan my completed patterns and then draw paths over the scan with a vector graphics program (Inkscape) and then convert everything to PDF. I've got one that I've done like this and will post the links to my dropbox account where I will store them for now.
Gauntlet pattern:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1p3igyffh6f07 ... .03.12.pdf
If anyone has any trouble with the links, just let me know. I'll probably include a page on my website for archive members as well.
Please, just let me know what I can do, if anything to be of service.
Thanks!
CF

It would be nice if there was a way for people to submit pictures of items they made with the patterns.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
I'm currently working on a pattern archive on my website. Here's a link to what I've got so far (Just my mitten gauntlet pattern):
http://www.foxandflame.com/index.php?page=patterns
If anyone wants to submit a pattern, I'd be up for hosting them, provided that they aren't too large (I'd have to check my storage on the server) but I'm sure most patterns probably wouldn't be. It would be free of charge, all patterns free of charge and credit given to authors. I know some other people are probably doing this too but I just thought it might be good to have stuff in more than one place and also try to give back to the AA community. If people don't want to do any submissions or think it's a bad idea, that's cool too and I'll just post my own patterns. And, of course, I'd let folks know when/if my website was going to be shutdown permanently.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
What would people think of setting up a pattern wiki? Patterns could be cross referenced by a bunch of factors; period, author, skill level, ect. Uploading should be easier also, so the Mod would only have to cull flagged patterns.
I would be happy to work on it if there is interest

Is this idea still going to see the light of day? I think it would be awesome.
Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
This is pathetic! We have multiple top armorers willing and ready to give already processed armor patterns and the one (???) moderator hasn't done anything (or allowed delegation to highly known and trusted members) in MONTHS???
Seriously, WTF???? I know this is a part-time volunteer gig and we all get busy (I have three kids all under 8 and volunteer in multiple areas), but it you can't get the shit figured out in months, DELEGATE!!!!! Craig has been on the board for how long?? As long as I can remember. I'm sure Craig can handle the pattern section if (according to his resume on his website) he can code firmware and know multiple low level programming languages!

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
Since the board members aren't really responding, why doesn't someone create another web page where people (who want to share) can place all their patterns? Maybe then, after creating such a page, post a forum telling the archive members about it? That's probably the best solution I can see since it really has been months since JT posted on this topic.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
I'm already getting my own armour website for my personal projects, plus another web project. Its coming down to being in my best interest to purchase a small server. It will be a couple or months before I get ky site up and runjing, but I am more than willing to host a patterns section. Or if people are willing to wait, I can host a dedicated site for it on the server when I purchase one.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
There is a lot to be said for a central repository of patterns. I have all my patterns on my web site, but it would be good to also have them on this site. It serves as a backup as well as a single point for people to browse. I'm willing to maintain the armour pattern and essay repository.
A big issue for me is that as time goes on I learn more and want to revise old patterns. Also, I really should write an essay about selecting heat treatable materials for armour, heat treating equipment, and how to heat treat the armour. I know that those essays will need to be revised as we as modern armourers learn better ways to construct armour for sport combat use.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
Not only sport armour but historical as well. Theres a lot of little nuances that most people don't see unless someone points it out.
Well the best option if JT doesn't want to give out an admin account to his server is to create a site with a similar name, like armourarchivepatterns.___ either on a host server like godaddy or similar. Replace the hyperlink for patterns and essays on the archive home page to connect to the pattern and essays site. I'm sure if one or two of us have admin access to the pattern site it can be taken care of easily. It would all be very simple html coding. Possibly create a easy way to submit new entries or for editing. Which will be other types of coding languages, but it is very possible.

I'm just curious, how difficult would it be for Mr. JT to give out such an administrative account? I mean he's obviously too busy to be doing all this stuff on his own or we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
Its easy, but I understand why he wouldn't want to give out an admin account to his server. I wouldn't give an admin account to my server when I get one.
Edit: Just for further explanation for clarification. The forum is a program with moderator and admin accounts for the program itself. Admins, moderators, and users can only interact with the program itself, not directly with the server. The patterns page is a website, not run by the forum program. As it currently is, in order to edit, upload, or delete information seen on the page, you must log into the server to add, edit, or delete files that are in a format that web browsers recognize.

Re: Pattern Archive - Who's Mantaining It
This is just phpBB and probably a very out date version at that. I would be very shocked if phpBB didn't have the ability for a phpBB admin (no server account) to have all the functionality we need.
I WOULD be very hesitant in using anything with Armour Archive in the url or site reference. I have no idea how the ownership of Armour Archive is, but getting into any type of content legal issues can get messy, very fast... This gets me wondering what the legal status the content in the Armour Archive actually is?
I would be willing to volunteer time, money, technical expertise (I'm a Linux Admin/application Admin) to creating a wiki-like repository for patterns or just forking the whole AA (if the current trend continues)...
