Sorry coreythompsonhm, I didn't see your Edit.

It would be nice if we could get something that was completely "open sourced" and independent (i.g. run and hosted by say a non-profit entity). I'm thinking in software terms where you open sourced software and various licenses like GNU GPL, LGPL, etc...

As far as domain name, I'm sure JT will be fine with it or something similar, this is a not for profit website. I just need to shoot him a pm or one of the moderators shoot him a pm and we can discuss it. As far as I know Effingham owns the domain name, which as we all know, he has passed away recently so thats a whole problem upon itself which others are taking care of when the time is right.

As far as a patterns/articles site, we can either have people who want to contribute shoot an email to the admin for that site with their content included as a file. It would be an easy ish addition to make, some quick html, upload, and its up, as you know. Have an index with hyperlinks to each article or patterns page.

On the index page a link at the bottom could take you to a submission page as a different option. That would be a not so quick option as far as programming goes but saves admin time in the long run. Since I would prefer image files to be stored on the server rather than people linking to off site image storage sites, it starts getting rather complicated and decidedly not user friendly for those not computer inclined.

I think that the small headache now of formating how to articles and pattern pages now will be better than a large headache now and user frustrations in the future. Once the influx of patterns and articles happen in the beginning, they will most likely taper off nicely to a easy workload. YMMV

One thing that is very very nice about the AA is that it is all very self contained and rarely have problems past the obligatory internet spammers. When a problem does arise with a member, it gets dealt with quietly, in private by JT and moderators depending on the situation. This board is very unique in that aspect, at least as far as the ones I am a member of. JT is a very busy person, he pops in now and again, makes sure the server is running correctly whenever he has a spare moment, but this is all possible because of the awesome people that are here.

Basically, don't fix what isn't broken. If we want a new shiny option, we need to figure out a way that JT doesn't have to have more on his plate.

At this point I think that starting a separate web site for armour patterns and essays would be the way to go. If we were able to mirror the contents to other web sites it would serve as both a backup and allow us to gain a wider audience. I'm willing to help, but I don't have the time to be in charge of something like that. Someone who does web and sysadmin work as their regular job and has the time and motivation would be a good choice.
Best Regards,

I'll start looking at what open source software is out there and prices for various types of hosting (cloud based/bare metal)...

I would be happy to work on it if there is interest
There has been a Wiki around since 2010 but no-one seemed particularly keen on updating it. I've gone through and added links to the patterns posted in this thread but feel free to add your own as I'll probably run out of motivation again soon :)

I'm getting BorealisSteel back up and active (borealissteel.ca is currently active, borealissteel.com has had some... issues)

I'll track down what I need to do an automated (remote) backup of the site, since "site rot" and malicious attacks have cost many a site (like Aarador) a considerable amount of content - my neuroses about backups kept the *content* of borealis steel available, but the site config got pretty badly munched, and it was harder than it needed to be to get it back up, in part because I hadn't done my homework on Wordpress (a pretty decent publishing package) and the PHP / Database backend.

I have (deliberately) avoided adding a forum to Borealis Steel, since the "splitting" of forum traffic across multiple sites is counterproductive: I used to post on Aarador because it was more focused on the recreation aspects of armour, but most of the folks who used to "live" there are now here.

Since I'm paying for hosting right now anyway (as are a number of folks) drop me a PM if you are interested in adding to Borealis Steel. If folks want to mirror or host what is currently on Borealis steel, drop me a line (PM). A number of my articles lived on Aarador (and I think still do) so I don't have an issue with granting permission for them to live on other sites with appropriate attribution.

I'd also like to put together an effort to consolidate Mac's "cobwebs" thread into some concrete "how to" articles, since his eye and sense of design are enviable. Perhaps more importantly, his ability to express the importance of specific details (and articulate why they matter) is in a class of its own. Ugo and Partick are mind-bogglingly good at moving metal to their will (whim?) but Mac (at least for me) is a better teacher.

I'll also be trying to organize another Hammer-in or armourers meet-up in the not too distant future, but I already have a lot on my plate, so this is likely 2015 at the earliest (although if you are in the NW of North America we may be trying an informal get together in October)

It has been a long time since I posted any patterns. Since I am going to have back to back operations at the VA, which will give me a lot of down time. I guess I am just going to have to post some new ones.

Finally 2012 picked up after 27 years dropped through the cracks and buried in the sand. I only filed in 1985.

I want to thank you guys in advance for reviving this and all your hard work. I aspire to achieve some level of competency in armoring soon.

What do people think of a basic drop box or google drive setup?
It will be a breeze to upload to

Welcome, Donny M. Ever bent a piece of metal -- with intent -- before?

For the veriest newb we like to suggest a pair of spaudlers -- articulated, smallish-to-small shoulder pieces. They teach forming, finishing, cleaning edges up, rivet peining, and as many as three kinds of articulation. Doesn't really need anything spectacular in the way of shop tools, and we'll want to ask what tools you have got. All in one small, manageable and useful armor piece.
