WTS or Trade Large SCA Legal Helm, New SCA member

Hey, my name is Paul, I'm new to the SCA and trying to get some armor together as cheaply as possible. I traded for this helm, its real nice quality, great visibility, but too big for me. My head is 23" in circumference, the helm is 28" in circumference. I've used various forms of padding and I can't quite make up the difference comfortably.

I'd like to sell this helm for $50 plus shipping or trade for a more suitable helm for me.

thats all the foam you put in?

Dude try foaming the crap out of it, two to four layers!

I bet you can make it work if you add lots more foam.

I did put more foam in it, helm is just too big. The Helm is also a little long for me, currently it rests on the back of my gorget. I'd like to find it a better home with someone who has a bigger head and neck than I do.

If he puts too much foam in it he wont be able to feel a good hit though and that would be no good.

Sounds like it's too tall and narrow. I also have a pinhead...er...I mean 23" circumference head, and my bascinet is 29" in diam. at the nose. and it's a pretty close fitting helm. That helm looks a bit rounder then some, and if it's 28" around at the nose bump, then it's probably a bit small to give much adjustment for padding to center the helm properly on his head.
But the height is the problem I see on almost any helm. Guys with giraffe necks can't wear short stocky helms and people with no necks can't wear the long ones.

Yeah the length may be the issue. I think I want to go with a stockier helm a little more narrow with less padding. I'd like to get knocked around a bit more as I start out to judge blow effectiveness as well.

Edit: The helm is 28" at the crown in circumference. Around the nose as you can see it would be much larger.

WOW! That sure is an, ugh......wow!

If its too long, just whack off some of the bottom.
Too big is a problem -particularly trying to find someone willing to trade for it.

O.O

Paul,

Welcome to the great game. I hope you have a great time. In Caid we used to have an annual tournament where the prize was the ugliest helm we'd ever seen. If you won you looked forward to the next year, when you got to give it to somebody else. If your local group wants to start up a similar tourney I'd say you have a candidate there.

Failing that, a pell-topper perhaps.

Seriously, you'll find a lot of resources here for beginner gear, much of which can be had for very little money. While it's true that you can spend as much as you want for some sweeeet gear, it's also true that there are lots of people who can send you to very affordable stuff.

Folks! Chime in here, please. Who's got a low-cost beginner helm to start Paul's path of glory?

How much for the new member?

Goodluck with rehoming that beauty! There are many that need helmets. I'll notify the guys in my barony.

You could always take the face off it and make a slightly odd looking sugar loaf.

I am BRAND NEW to the SCA and heavy fighting, I am also rather poor at the moment. So if this helm is still for sale I would gladly take it off your hands

Regretfully I forgot to update this once I got back from the War, there I got rid of it. Best of luck in your searches though!

Yep, that's a south tower helm. He is from Canada. I bought one similar for a friend of mine with a 22" head and it too was way too big. Great helm, just too large for smaller people. It's also a spun top, so no prominently oval heads need apply. ;p

I personally like a close fitting helm, like they wore back in the day.

As for looking for inexpensive, Otto has decent, inexpensive, and attractive helms. If you can wait about a month (that's what he said his production queue was last I spoke with him, it may be slightly longer or less) he may be one to go to.

Hjalmr, also on the AA, may be able to get you an inexpensive helm.

If you absolutely have to have it overnight, Duke Icefalcon is probably the best one to go with. And you will find the utmost respect for him on the AA, lots of people swear by his craftsmanship and business practices. You will, however, pay a higher price than from some who do this part time.

Full disclaimer: I've never bought from any of them, but I have a helm and elbows on order from Otto. A lot of people on the AA put their faith in all, though.
