I know Knutt's maille is famous around here, and everybody seems to be interested in the flat variety.

According to his website however he offers round maille too on special order. Anyone ever see any of his welded round maille?

He did round first, and for decades. It's good stuff, too, and he stands by it for life. Duke Moonwulf of the Midrealm has worn his shirt for at least 27 years that I know of.

Awesome. Do you happen to know what gauge wire he used? The size of the rings approx?

Thanks

I believe it's 3/8" id and 18 or 20 ga stainless wire. On that order, but I could be off a little.

I have an early version of a round-wire haubergeon that predates the flat-wire mail. I believe it is made from 18ga stainless welding rod. I ordered it based on the mail shirt he made for Duke Moonwulf in the Midrealm in the early 80's (this same shirt was on display at the "History of Armor" exhibit at the Midrealm 40th Anniversary event).

I can say with confidence that it is of the same fine quality that one expects from Knut and Weldedchainmail.com. I have only fought in it a few times (it was part of a 14th kit I no longer use), but I know that Moonwulf's has seen literally decades of hard use. The weave from the round rings is more transparent than the flat (have several pieces of the latter, too), but the construction is solid and should provide years of service.

Feel free to ping me if you have more questions or would like me to post a photograph. With regards... AoC

I still use my 15 year old aventail on helmets with no sign of wear. The flat link is lighter, though, and gives better coverage visibly. Both are an awesome chi=oice for SCA fighting.

Same here, I've been using my round wire aventail for many years. It's a bit on the heavy side, but I pretty much won't give it up, Knut built an embattled border in copper into it... and I'm pretty much biased, I was squired to the man.
