After having no luck selling a helm of mine locally I'd like to try selling it here, thing is that I've never sold anything online and I'm really not sure how to deal with the whole money aspect of things.
SO, when you cant deal with cash in hand how do you do it? so i go through pay pal, ask for a check in the mail? money orders? whats the usual method for this?

From Canadians, I prefer Interac direct deposit. Nobody uses cheques anymore, here at least. A postal money order or bank draught is expensive for small sales but the safety and ease of deposit is pretty high.
From Americans, I take credit cards as I have merchant accounts. For one off sales like you are talking about, PayPal is probably the least painful both for purchaser and vendor. Factor in the transactional costs before you accept the funds on a deal. As vendor, you could be in for an ugly surprise when you try to get the money.

a lot depends on how quickly you want to ensure payment.
paypal is quick to transfer but you need a bank card or routing number to open an account.
Money orders work well but you have to go to a bank to cash them. The same is true with checks. If you take checks most people wait a week or so to ensure the check is drawn from an active account.
Desposit directly to your account is a good option but this pratice is uncommon in the states as the person needs your routing number to compleat the transaction.
