WTB mail scraps
I'm looking for mail scraps I can use to cover a pair of shoes.
I'd prefer to do the shoes in matching types of mail, but I'll take a look a look at anything you have.

Varukh - I'm not that interested in butted but thanks
I dont know. I think a strong solvent might do it. I dont think its martensite or parkerized or anything fancy. Black stuff comes off on my hands whenever I touch it. I dont really want to mess with stripping them.

You could try tumbling with a lightly abrasive medium. I haven't tried de-blackening mail before, but I've been able to knock a good deal of rust off a shirt before by throwing it in a bag with a handful of rice and running it for a while in the drier (when my wife wasn't home to ask what the dreadful racket was, of course.

For removing blackened crud: if some is coming off on your hands I'd give it a quick dip and shake in acetone to remove any greasy or oily stuff, then a dip into muriatic acid (concrete cleaner) should strip off the blacked stuff in minute or so. I also have some scrap maille... About 20 pounds of butted stainless, euro 4-1 weave; its 1/16" stainless welding wire made into about 1/4" rings (made on a 1/4" mandrel, so they are a hair larger do to springyness of the wire). Some very nice flush cut, some has more of a pinch cut. I'll sell the flush cut for $20/pound, and the less fancy pinch cut for $15/pound.
