I saw this auction yesterday and though the exact same thing!

The only thing I can think of is that whoever built it spent a lot of time consulting the 3rd Ed. AD&D book. That particular tome is REALLY enthusiastic about putting spikes on everything (and doubling the number of striking surfaces on otherwise perfectly useful weapons...).
