Creator-Owned Titles: Chivalry Bookshelf - Author Settlement
Greetings to all,
As many of you may be aware, some of Freelance Academy Press’ authors have been involved in a dispute with a previous publisher, Chivalry Bookshelf. The community will be pleased to know that these authors and Chivalry Bookshelf have reached a mutual agreement that resolved all remaining issues. As part of that agreement, ownership of all the authors’ intellectual property as well as the remaining stock of each of the authors’ books has been transferred to the respective authors.
At the authors’ request Freelance Academy Press is pleased act as the sole broker, until supplies run out, of the remaining stock of the following, limited edition titles:
These books are new and in perfect condition. Although these titles were originally published by Chivalry Bookshelf, there is no longer any affiliation between the authors and Chivalry Bookshelf and all proceeds of the sale of these books will go directly to its author as part of the settlement. These books represent some of the seminal modern research into western martial arts and European martial culture and have become the foundation of the modern curricula now used by many schools around the world.
All these titles may be found in their own separate category on the FAP website.
All the best from Freelance Academy Press,

Excellent! I'm glad the authors have almost made it to the end of the road on that nightmare. I have a few of those titles, and for anyone considering getting them, they are great books - and now that the money goes to the authors, I recommend getting a copy or two. Especially "In Service of the Duke" - such a large, colorful, excellent book!

Better to do a forum search -- it's a long story, and "what did he NOT do" is probably the better question.

Of course. But you have to have the foresight to take five minutes and Google things just to be sure. The Wilmington Township Fellowship (and the Framingham University Collectors and Keepsakes Union) never knew what hit 'em.

Assuming there is demand, will Freelance potentially be reprinting any of these, or is the existing stock all there will ever be?

Sweet! Glad to hear some good came of all this.
It's still weird to me that I asked a simple question and thusly helped start the avalanche that lead to this.
@ Christian Tobler: Does this mean I can get that signed copy of you book you offered me a few years back?

Re: Creator-Owned Titles: Chivalry Bookshelf - Author Settle
Hey folks,
It's possible that some of the titles may see reprint at some point. If so, they would require a complete re-laying out of the book: Chivalry Bookshelf continues to own the design of the books (but not their content).
Certainly, I'm planning on re-doing "Fighting with the German Longsword" in an expanded and revised form. [BTW, there are very few copies remaining - there weren't many left in stock at the time of the settlement]. I think there will be a revised version of Tom Leoni's Fabris book, but I don't have a time frame for you yet.
As for my other two CB titles, I doubt those will be re-done in the forseeable future. "Secrets" would require far too much re-visiting, and too many photos to reshoot, and "In Service of the Duke" is a very expensive title to print. There are, however, a number of copies of those titles available, so just about everyone who wants one should be able to be accomodated.
@Thorsteinn - drop me a PM and remind me where we left off there!
Thanks again for all the support friends!

Re: Creator-Owned Titles: Chivalry Bookshelf - Author Settle
Christian,
I'd love it if you released the translation of Ringeck from "Secrets" without interpretation as its own book. Not an insult to the interpretation, but I understand the enormity of the task of reshooting the pictures and redoing the layout. I also think that the translation could stand on its own or as part of a collection (like In St George's Name) given that "Fighting" is planned for rerelease. I recall speaking with you at one point a couple of years ago wherein you mentioned that if you were doing it again you would separate the translation from the interpretation anyways.
What I'd really like is a side by side by side of Dobringer, von Danzig and Ringeck translations, but I realize that's pretty unlikely.

Re: Creator-Owned Titles: Chivalry Bookshelf - Author Settle
Hi Craig!
A separated Ringeck translation is certainly possible. I must admit I'd have to steel myself even for that - there's so much I'd have to footnote these days, given our knowledge of the manuscript now.
A concordance of the glosses is far less likely though. For one thing 3227a is structured radically different than von Danzig, Ringeck, Lew, or Speyer, so it doesn't 'concord' very well (and it's woefully incomplete) with the others. A concordance of the latter four would have value, for some true geekout types, but would be difficult to present in a format useful on the page.
Cheers,
CHT

Thanks Christian!
Heck, I'd love to have access to a translation of Lew or Speyer at all!
Comparisons of all four would be fantastic! I get what you say about Dobringer, although I still frequently pull out the relevant section when exploring something in von Danzig and want more information.
These days von Danzig is my central source and I draw from Ringeck first and Dobringer second to support the material.
However, I understand that I'm a poor demographic.

That said.... Christian, if you need, I'll be glad to offer my services in layout (Adobe InDesign for the win) and editorial stuff if needed to update them. They need to be kept out there.

This is great news for the authors and the WMA community. It's simply a shame that you all were put through such unpleasantness.
