So the armor thing is not going as well or as fast as I planned, however, My caster is up and running again and since my BFA is in metalsmithing I thought about what I could make that folks might be interested in. I bought the Buckles 1250-1800 book from Windrose at Gulf wars this year and started carving buckles last night. I got a double loop oval buckle #363 1550-1650 done, which is a flat spectacled buckle with a sunken, angled tab holder on both sides, and started a five petal flower buckle #272, kinda like a tudor rose shaped buckle. I would love ideas and imput on whatever you guys would like to see and I can make the waxes and start putting them out in production. If you have a picture of a buckle and would like it reproduced also just send me a picture and lets see what I can do.

Buckles are always good, but don't forget the chape ends and the plaques for plaque belts.

I can cast in most any non-ferrous metal but Platinum. I mainly work in brass or bronze and silver, but i can cast pewter, copper and gold. I have not tried to tin anything yet either and even though it is period I am not sure if I want to go into that.

How much for the spectacle buckles in bronze?

I am in the market for some to strap my new legs with. Do you have any pictures I can see of them? What width of strap will they fit?

I do plan on making 14th, 15th and 16th century mostly, and mainly in decorative styles. My new kit is 15th century so I do plan on starting there anyways.

Jeff and others make great spectacle buckles for armor, so if you need some right now I would recommend them. As of this time I dont have any buckles to sell but that is the plan.


I hope to be casting in the next week so I can keep you all updated. I am not sure on pricing yet but I do all the work myself so that should keep costs down if I can make larger production runs. Hopefully when Jean Paul gets back from Lillies he will put some pictures up for me as that will give me time to get some more wax patterns done.

My only buckle book does not have chape ends in it and I dont have dress accessories yet, maybe if this works I will buy it and have MORE BOOKS. If anyone wants to send me pics of what you are interested in buying I do not take commissions but I do take suggestions on what folks want to buy. If I know what you want, I will know what to make.

Wow Dmitry I have never seen the belt database on the Red Kaganate. It rocks!!! If you have any preferences let me know. I did notice that most are 3 part buckles which makes them a little more labor intensive but I also have not seen anyone making them. The pics from the Irmitage have very good detail especially the golden horde belt. That would be a very large project to make and the cost would probably be outragious.

Raymond the Quiet is already doing the Hermitage Golden Horde belt (and I think someone sent him our pics -- compare, <a href=http://www.quietpress.com/Medieval_Mongol.html>Raymond's page</a> and <a href=http://www.geocities.com/normanjfin/belts/ghbelt.html>Red Kaganate page</a> . He also did a seljuk plate we have on the site. Whoever pointed him to the site, thanks!).

Peter Beatson does a pretty good <a href=http://www.geocities.com/normanjfin/belts/mgyar3in1.html>Magyar belt set</a> (not sure about the availability)

I think there would be quite a bit of intereset in the <a href=http://www.geocities.com/normanjfin/belts/sarkel.html>Sarkel belt</a>
Another <a href=http://www.geocities.com/normanjfin/belts/unkbelt.html>Khazar belt</a> from the Hermitage might also be interesting, and there are a lot of detail pics on the site for this one.

Hey, I was at the event where he got his nickname. I'd blackmail him too, but he has even better dirt on me.

He is a fine craftsman. He made my Ducal and my wife's County coronets. We are very proud of them.

Investiture???

I do believe they are referring to a baronial investiture coming up in Wiesenfeuer (Oklahoma City) in a couple weeks.

Bunny, I'm keenly interested in seeing what you're doing for late 15th and early 16th. I'm a hardware whore. Love nice buckles and tips and stuff like that.

I want an affordable, tough 14th century buckle in 1/2 inch size.

Myk, Lucais is going to be invested as the new Baron of Wiesenfeuer at Academy of the Bow in 2 weeks. I got the Tudor rose buckle done and ready to cast now. I am gonna try a mongol one next and will let you know how it turns out.

Help me a bit, to me these look like plates that were riveted onto a leather or cloth belt is that right? I read that they are "pinned" to a belt so I am guessing that there are rivets mounted onto the plates. Plese help me clarify this.

The buckle plate is attached to the belt with 3 prongs -- so, yes, riveted on.
There are two belt tips, one was sewn on through 7 holes, another had two prongs on the back for riveting.
Sounds like most of the plaques also have prongs for riveting them on.
The article on the site is actually pretty complete, take a closer look if you like the belt..
