REVISED WITH PHOTOS AND MORE INFO
For sale: Anshelm Backpoint Bascinet w/Knuut aventail, grill, roundnose visor, and period-looking liner.

I recently bought a kettle helm from WMA and have no need for 2 SCA helms as my fighting will most likely be limited to annual participation at Pennsic. So, I am considering parting with my bascinet from Anshelm.

The yellow lace seen at the side is the pointing for the quilted chin cup.

For more details, see http://www.anshelmarms.com/bascinets.html

Condition (REVISED):
I used this helm for 3-4 days at Potrero and Great Western War as a Combat Archer. So other than my qualification this helm has never been hit. I decided that the original finish of the helm was just too shiny so I dulled it a bit with steel wool. So, the helm has seen very little use and has no wear aside from a bit of cosmetic wear due to storage (faded leather dye, small scuff marks on the leather, small patches and freckles of surface rust, minor scratches). The liner and chin cup, being cloth, could use some light cleaning (which I can attend to before the sale.

Note: The bottom photo above shows how the leather edging is stitched THROUGH the metal. I just accquired the roundnose visor recently and intended it just to put on the helmet for display. Because of the leather edging, the roundnose visor does not seat down onto the face opening as closely as it might. Although the visor seems usable despite this issue (you would need to add a strap), if the new owner found the situation not to his liking he could either remove the leather edging under the hinge area or modify the pivot point on the hinge loop of the visor (cut and reweld into another position).

List price for these items:
  • helm $400.00
  • roundnose visor $250.00
  • 12 vervelles (installed) $72.00
  • Welded s/s aventaille $225.00
  • Quilted cloth/foam liner + leather edging $100+ (?)
  • Gamboised aventaille $50
  • Combined value over $1000.00
I will entertain serious offers by e-mail. I will not seperate the components so please don't ask.

Please respond to finkas@verizon.netx (remove the x). I can deliver to this Pennsic if desired.

Thanks for your interest,
Tim Finkas

Trade you my two sons for it.....

They are young, 6 and 4, and very bright. They would make good shop apprentices.

I've seen this helmet up close and can attest that it is a truly fine example of Anshelm's work. Betterthan the Anshelm bascinet that I own. The added care taken with the liner and cloth aventail make it a piece worth wearing and worth a tidy sum. If you want a bascinet you can't go wrong with this one. It'll last you a lifetime.

Tim, let me know what you get for this one. I have a medium one that I am offering after your's is sold.

I can't afford it, but thanks for the inspirational pics- I'm in the process of customizing one of Lewis Moore's helmets into something like this.
