Alan,
where can donations be sent to? It's the time of giving and I know how I'd feel if my WMA helm "walked" out of my garage.

God keep Gunnar, and when he receives his helmet anew, my wager is that he keeps it with his sword, next to his bed!

I am unfortunately unable to donate cash, as my finances are pretty bleak (and at Christmas time too

) but I would be willing to make someone an aventail for free if they would donate $20 to this cause. Let me know if you are interested. I'm really sorry I can't donate cash myself.

How close are you to raising the money? If you still need more, I will make another aventail for someone if they will donate $20 to the cause, or a coif if they donate $30.

I received an email from Alan after making my donation and he was close to $600, but had to add things back up to be certain. He also stated that Gunnar wanted to be a part of the final assembly of his new helmet so final construction was being put on hold for a few weeks then Gunnar is going to travel to Alan's shop to finish things up.
hope it all works of for him, I keep thinking how pissed I would be if my helmet walked out my garage!

It is weird when you think about it...
Someone stole this helm. And either they know what it is, or they don't.
Maybe it just looked shiny and cool to them, or maybe they really value it as a piece of wearable art. But for the life of me I can't decide which the worse scenario is. Obviously if the person who stole it had some idea of the level of skill and artistry it took to make it, then they must have had some idea of its value; both monetarily, and of the likely importance of it to the victim. This would make thier crime objectively that much worse, that much more evil, because they would know the precise amount of damage they were doing to their victim. Yet there is some justificaction if the person knew what it was, and stole it precisely because he wanted something exactly like that. It would be irresitable because he knew what it was.
But I find the alternative idea of a random theft to be insupportable for other reasons. Because now some punk has a unique piece of property and has no idea of its value or significance, and so probably doesn't place much value on it himself. It didn't enrich the thief's life at all, and yet left the victim desolate. I do not know which is worse.
I mean I wouldn't hope that the thief was enjoying his ill-gotten gains, and yet is seems a shame that the one person who might actually ever see this helm again, would be one who cannot appreciate its artistry.

I have thought much the same thing, but have found the thoughts too perplexing to frame.
However, it is a unique item. I should not be surprised if it turns up somewhere.

odds are, knowing the Ohio hicks I have run into...it is on a fence post being shot at...or in a landfill somewhere...

I once had a friend that had everything stolen from his car EXCEPT his sallet. It's like they didn't know what to make of it, but the body armour? Oh yeah! That's going to the GWAR show...

Hey, we're not all hicks here in Ohio. As a matter of fact, the owner of The Limited, Les Wexner, lives here as well as the Schottenstein family. (although, not in my neighborhood - but people in my neighborhood SHOP at Schotenstein's

)
Does the owner of the stolen helm live in Ohio? If so, I can keep an eye out for it.

Ps. Someone has taken me up on the second offer for an aventail. I may offer another one after this one is finished, but if I do, it won't be until sometime after Christmas.
