Well folks,

I've decided I'm going to empty my room of some of my past works... Even my Sherdan shield that I just finished. I'm getting rid of my Philistinian shield, Sherdan shield, Kite shield, a new simple Egyptian shield, and a Stainless gladius that I believe is a Denix piece... Anyway, here are photos and descriptions of the different pieces.

(Moderators or worried users, these images are from my site, so I'm not sucking up our host space with large images:D)

Kite shield... This thing is not combat worthy, it's pretty, but has very many flaws. It'll hold together well enough, but there are little problems and uglies everywhere. 42" tall, 20" or so wide... The boss is 18 guage. No rivets to be found on it! All brass nails or tacks for the canvas covering. The paint job is pretty, but simple. No rim... I suggest that this be used for a costume for Halloween/parties, etc... Not a serious shield, but fun and light. It's made from 3/8th inch pine-faced plywood, and doesn't weigh more than a few pounds. The padding is simply felt nailed to the board... Pathetic, yes? It will only fit a lower arm about 11" around in in strap. It DOES have a shoulder strap. My first attempt at a medieval shield, and the price reflects the quality. $40.

Sherdan Shield, well, this is nicer than the other! A crazy 36" in diameter with a weight of about 14 pounds. A real cowhide cover. Made from 1/2 inch oak faced plywood with hand-cut fake plank lines... Stained shoulder strap and handle. Very secure. Held by bolts (still no rivets) that have the heads grazed down until they look rather like the tops of rivets. The boss is only held by nails, but is secure. The job I did with securing the cowhide on the back is sloppier than the examples you'll see, and the cowhide isn't incredibly tight, but when it's held, it's hard to notice any looseness, except if it's upside down or you hit the front and it catches some wind on the inside! It has a brand showing, but it's hard to see from a distance, and doesn't make it ugly or anything, just, odd... $75.

Philistinian shield. This is nice. The grip is very stable, but it's not stiff. When you hold it it may feel a bit awkward... I wouldn't suggest an upper forearm of more than about 10" for this (sorry, I made them for my skinny arms). I did a great job with attaching the hide this time, and was really proud of how it turned out! Overall 22" in diameter, not more than a few pounds. Same half-inch oak faced plywood, once again with rather odd hand-made planklines... $75.

Egyptian Shield... This is a new one. The plank lines are the same as the others. It's 20" wide and 28" tall, last time I checked. Also considerably light. The boss is flat, and is a bit bent upward on one side, but the hide covers that well enough. The securing of the hide is the same as the Philistinian, and they're both as tight as anything. Pretty pieces, for my skills! The grip will fit most hands, I'd think... $60.

Philistinian Feather Helmet... Based on the Egyptian Medinet Habu reliefs... Mine will fit a head about 22" in circumference... The work looks nice, but is not terribly strong. It won't fall apart, unless if it isn't stored/displayed properly. The sewn felt lining is thin, but stuffed inside, so it could probably be a bit more spacious if you figured out some dammed way to remove it and make a new one, if you wanted. The chin strap is big, but serves its purpose. Several noticably large ones were shown on the relief. The 'feathers' (made from leather, as a popular theory I liked demanded!) are not stiff, but stay relatively in order. The top is bunched in a fashion also used by modern scholars as a likely way of forming the helmet, but is not TERRIBLY tight. I have rawhide on it, but if you're not careful, it could slip. Sturdy, but I'd suggest using it for diplay only, where it will remain that way! $60.

This is a Denix stainless steel gladius. Has very nice and visible, if not clunky, castings on the scabbard. The sword is 28" in length, with a neat looking blade, if not for the fact that it's total fantasy pish-posh... Heavy, too... $40.

Shipping on all of these things will be up to the seller. Although I'd like to be able to let you have the stuff for the prices shown, I would make a lot less than I even paid for materials if I had to pay for shipping! So, depending on where you are, things like the Sherdan shield could cost an extra $40 or so if you choose a terrible place to ship to. but it shouldn't be that bad in the states, I'm sure. I'll probably send UPS or Fedex for the big stuff to keep the cost down...

Gregory, Have you thought about soaking the rawhide in water then puting it tight around the leather on the helm and let it dry? Rawhide will shrink up and dry very hard. Nice work.

i like the helmet, next time perhaps you should bevel the edges on the leather

Actually, I did soak the rawhide... But, I'd already had some cheap leather holding it together, and I'd already cut the top short! So, when I put the rawhide on, there wasn't any place to grasp tightly to push it in when I secured it... Next time, though, next time...

By the way, the Gladius has a buyer... Not sold yet, though, so if you have interest, let me know.

:bump:

(The buyer for the Gladius hasn't gotten back to me in a couple days, so if anyone is interested in that, gimme' a hollar!)

And offers are welcome... If someone wants all four shields for some strange reason (to beat the crap out of or whatever) I'd give them to them for $150.

I sent you a PM about it...

By the way, my Bronze Age shields have all been on Ebay for 6 and a half days, with no bids, cheap... My problem is that NO ONE is interested in these types of shields, and I don't want to be like the run-of-the-mill sellers and have to type "Viking, SCA" into the title to get hits...

Any suggestions, guys?

i think the shipping cost is what kills the sale of shields. for SCA, the leather strap is not suitable (or the norm is a better way of saying it) shields are made for heavy combat. Those two things probably fatally kill the sales unless you find a local guy. GL though :)

Which one, Sarge?

The kite shield is taken by the fellow who asked about it above you a couple posts... Are you referring to one of the Bronze Age shields, or that? I'm sure that all three Bronze Age shields would work in boffer combat, if properly used... They're made from 1/5 inch oak plywood with the covers on them, so I don't doubt their strength.
