Tongs?

Post by DAVID01 »

Who has blacksmith tongs just laying around they'd sell cheap? Anyone have extras they don't use? anyone have any they'd like to just get out of the way? Need tools, could use a tong for holding R/R spike.

Thanks,David

Losthelm, I am just getting started in this so I don't know how to make them yet. Once I get a few maybe I can figure out how its done. I am just gonna start simple and try my hand at R/R spike knives. I plan to try a couple of Sax or langsax (sp) Useing some old leaf springs from an old 40 modle truck I found out in the woods covered in english ivy. If I get lucky I may end up buying a whole blacksmith shop from an old guy down the road . Cross your fingers for me. I plan on joining saltfork blacksmith association here in Oklahoma soon so I'm sure I'll get plenty of help there. Anyway thanks for getting with me on this, theres also another member that has contacted me , MiqueldZ from Cal.

Thanks Guys, David01

It seems like I have heard that making tongs is a good first project for a Smith. Plus, there is the real macho factor of saying "with a few exceptions, I make all my own tools."

Please forgive my ignorance, but why can't you use a big ole pair of channel locks?

Actually I thought about taking a large pair of pliers and welding long sticks of 1/4" tubing over the handles. As far as making my own tools I guess I should at least try it, I have saved plenty pics to go from.

Over at Anvilfire ( http://www.anvilfire.com ) under their Iforge section, there are a few tutorials on tongs. There is also this set of instructions, http://www.blksmth.com/tong_article.htm

polarbearforge,

Thank you for this information, these are perfect. I think maybe I "will" try to make a tong if it works out then I can make them as I need them.
