Quote Wanted on Gladiator Helmet!

Post by Gerhard von Liebau »

I'm interested in getting quotes for a particular gladiator helmet... It will be in bronze, and can be made using modern methods of construction (i.e. Two halves for the top, etc.) as long as it looks original from the outside!

This particular example has a hinged-visor on it, which opens down the middle with internal hinges on the top, below the brim. I'm not exactly sure of the mechanics, and as long as the hinge isn't noticeable, I won't worry about the aesthetics of it. There's probably some kind of lock on the bottom, at the chin area (I can see it's shape in the pictures I have, but don't know whether it's purely decorational or not!) But from the images I've collected I can't tell what kind of form these locks may have taken.

I'm open to suggestions from anyone who knows!

The helmet has some intricate metalworking (or more likely, castings?) necessary to add to the outside, such as the small lion's head and exra pieces on the sides.

I'd like the quote for the helmet both with and without these extra bits, just so I know how much of a difference it makes.

The helmet would be made to be close fitting to my 22.5" circumference head with the proper amount of padding, so will be relatively small to most production pieces (which is why I would like one made!)

I've asked for quotes from a couple of individuals but have had no response yet. I'm only debating this project, but depending on the quotes I get, I may be quite serious about it. So, if you could do it, please take the time to respond!

Thank you!

(p.s. The attached images are of the original that I'd like made, and a similar one as a reproduction, for comparison to the kind of quality I'd enjoy!)

Gregory

Give Matt at legio XX a buzz and see if he can recommend a maker for you.

Hey James,

I talk to Matt daily (due to our Bronze Age activities) and he's low on custom craftsmen, at the moment! I have all of the links he's got, anyway. I got a hold of Parker Brown, though, so hopefully something will work out with him. I've always admired his work!

If you haven't already, I'd recommend asking Richard about it at Knotwolf.
