Blink. Whups! 2 more sets of Wisby Gauntlets gone! Damn, that was fast.

Just my plug folks- I have a pair of Clay's hourglass finger gauntlets and they are INCREDIBLE! (yes, I use them for SCA- I took a greatsword shot to the fingers last night- it stung like all get out, but nothing broken or even injured- and they were much better than the egg gaunlets I've used in the past. I do recommend padding them though and using the finger bucklers) I also have a set of paldrons he did custom for me that are spectacular as well. And you won't deal with a nicer guy or better businessman. I had my stuff IN HAND (not promised, not just shipped, but in my hands) within a week of payment. In fact, when I asked him to make my hourglass gauntlets, he had them done for me in 4 days. That was almost TOO fast

I'll be doing a more detailed review of the stuff I've gotten from Clay with pictures, but I can't stress enough- if you want finger gauntlets, He's da MAN. And I recommend his other work highly- it's some of the best out there.

The elbows are very pretty, but my feeling is that 14 ga. throughout is a little overkill. I mean, your elbow ain't your head, and think of the extra weight. You should be able to get away with 16, esp. since it will be work-hardened, and maybe even 18 for the lames.

You are probably right about the weight, but I had some scrap and figured why not see what I could do with it.

OK, that's fair. Nothing sadder than a potential piece of armor trapped inside a bit of otherwise useless steel trying to get out. Say, how long does it take you to assemble a pair of finger gauntlets (either style) once the parts are done? I have a colleague fixing to make me a set of gauntlet parts but I need to assemble them myself and I haven't a clue how much time to allow.

To assemble all the pieces it roughly breaks down like this: finger pieces to leather about 4 hours, assembled pieces to glove about 2 hours and gloves to gauntlets about another 2 hours or so(maybe a little less), this is for the hourglass sets, for the wisbys more time is needed for the pieces of the hand to leather about 3 to 4 hours hours and the cuff pieces about 3 hours, this is assuming all the pieces have been formed and polished etc.. I do know it takes me just at 2 days to make a set of the hourglass and about 3 1/2 days to make a set of wisby, this is based on an 8 hour work day, hope that all helps.

Go to ONE party on a Friday and miss the next round of cool stuff....

Leo I only have the engraving done for one more pair of the templar motto and then another set with "In Nomini Patri" on for the cuffs and I am not sure how long it will take me to get more. I can do plain brass tips, knuckles, trim and bracelet, all the same size as the ones your squire had(btw they were my most beautiful work ever), and I will be glad to cut a deal if you wanted two sets with the mottos I have on hand, I will make them and send a total, roughly between 750 to 800 for both sets, let me know and I will get started on them today.

Had a dinner meeting on Saturday night, and my squire brought your gauntlets.

You know, he doesn't just do stuff on ebay- he will sell direct to you- so next time you have some $$, email him. I know exactly how you feel, I watched so many pairs of gauntlets go on ebay that I could not stand it anymore and finally just emailed him directly and bought a pair. Then I commissioned new paldrons... If he made breastplates, I'd be all over that too... Clay is NOT the wife's favorite person- but even she admires his stuff.

I got one of the two recent pairs of Wisbys. I've become a huge fan of Clay and Lewis' work, as there's no one else producing this quality work at this price point. I also have pair of hourglass gauntlets that I commissioned last year.

The Wisbys I just received show that their game is constantly improving - the shaping on the metacarpal is crisp and beautiful and the whole thing is stoutly constructed without being inordinately heavy.

Mine are ROCK SOLID! I was hit across the knuckles closest to the fingernails and didn't get so much as a red mark! These work because they are what they look like: armor. And they are the way to go for hand protection.

I agree, I also have a set of these.
Although I cannot for the life of me understand how the originals only used one buckle to hold them closed, they bell open funny....so I am going to add another buckle.

I really want to get finger guantlets, but I'm also trying to pay for my wedding and honeymoon. But with all the rave reviews, taking the posted advice to just ask, I have to see what else you may have laying around!

How do you have them padded Ceddie?

I have an earlier pair of Clay's hourglass gauntlets and have been hesitant to take a blow with them...

I cut strips of mouse pad just a bit narrower than the leather for the finger assembly then I just contact cemented them in place and trimmed them so they weren't too long. Getting hit on the tips of the fingers stings a bit but I haven't had any problems with it. It isn't as bad as you might think on the tips.

Instead of starting a new post I decided to reply on this one. I have been out most of last week with the flu but will start work again tomorrow now that I have enough strength to lift a hammer, getting sick sucks, I want to thank all of you who have posted compliments and all the feedback and orders I am receiving you guys are great and I thank each of you greatly you guys are the reasons I am getting better. I am looking at hiring a helper tomorrow or the next day and will in time supply anyone who wants them finger gaunts. Thanks again to everyone--Clay
