Does anyone know a good source for bamboo?
looking for bamboo lengths from 3ft to 9ft, 1"-1.25" diameter.
the Dojo i goto uses 'fukro shinai' split bamboo inside a leather bag, and the ones we have are getting kinda old, and I told my Sensei I'd see about making the school some new ones.
any leads appreciated.
Cheers,
Joe

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Probably a little safer to buy them ready made. Not cheap, but safer (no slight to you skills, i'm sure you understand).

Thanks for the link, but im rather set on making custom fukro shinai.
as far as danger, as long as one respects the machinery involved one is ok. (my father is a cabinet maker) making a jig to secure the bamboo for splitting is the main issue (and I've carpenter friends to assisnt gaps in my knowledge), im figuring a nice brace made from 2x4's to hold the bamboo in place and create a straight groove to cut with a jig saw. i've got a pretty good handle on the leather part.
a guy around here got sucked foot first into a wood chipper two days ago, because he tried to unjam some stuck brush with his foot. safety is often tied to respecting the machinery. and yes he got pulled all the way through, while his nephew watched unable to stop the machine. I can only imagine the nightmares the guy will have for the rest of his life.
thanks for the other link, I'm currently trying to wade through it all.
Cheers,
Joe

Thanks I would greatly appreciate that!
property wise, durability is key. abit of flex wouldnt be a bad thing either. im looking for 3ft-9ft lenghts in roughly 1"-1.5" diameter. the end result will be something similiar to a shinia used in kendo, except the business part of this training tool wil be covered in a leather bag, instead of being bound together. they will be used to test for sword evasion skills, and a might bit of sparring.
Thanks again,
Joe
