SOLD:Unfin. splint legs w/supplies2fin./NOW w/2 pairs elbows
SOLD:Unfin. splint legs w/supplies2fin./NOW w/2 pairs elbows
Ok, I am out of money and am in real danger of having to stop making projects unless I sell something soon. I had planned on eventually getting back to this and finishing it, but I need the cash.
I have one completely finished leg, and the supplies to finish the other. The supplies include a piece of leather to cut the straps from, buckles, rivets, the other knee, the precut leather cuisse (needs trimming where it attaches to the knee, but that is already traced on the back), a piece to cut the scallopy thing from, and the splints. I will also include the pattern to make the scallopy thing hanging from the knee.
I am also selling extra leather and matching elbows for a pair of splinted vams. Some of the leather is unusable, so if you have some general measurements for your forearms, I can check to see if there is enough leather here to make them.
I am including all of the splints and rivets that you should need to complete both the 2nd leg and both of the arms. The buckles for the arms are not included, but are available from Tandy.
Kness and elbows are 16 gauge stainless, splints are 16 gauge stainless, and the rivets are stainless.
EDIT: I forgot to add that there are 16 extra of the 12" long splints. Another 11 have been pre marked for the other leg. You would have enough extra splints to make 2 pairs of arms if you used 3 whole splints each.
Asking $250 plu shipping.
Here's the pics. The extra leather pic is pretty blurry, so if you would like to see some closeups, i will see if I can get a better pic.
Thanks,
Cat

Since there are enough splints left to make another set of arms, I will toss in these unfinished elbows as well. These are one of the first things I ever made and are not perfect, but could make good loaner gear. They need a bit of planishing and then sanding.
Here is a list of materials costs:
SS Splints: $50 from Rough From the Hammer (I believe)
SS rivets: $20
Leather: $30
SS knees: I valued these at $60
SS elbows: Valued at $40
Rough elbows: $0
Total: $200 for materials, $50 for the labor on the completed leg

These were made to be somewhat adjustable, so I will have to get some measurements to get a size range. I made them to more or less fit me(I'm 5'3), but they also work ok on my husband who's 5'8", although they don't come up as high on him. They wrap all of the way around the leg (overlapping in the back), so if they are too big or too small in circumference, you could probably cut them off at each end so they just cover the front/sides of the legs, and then make the straps to the length you need them.
I will measure the cops as well.
I just got up and am kinda in a fog, so lemme get a pot of coffee down and I will get those for you.

Ok, here is what I got. Let me know if you need more measurements, or if you need me to clarify where they were taken.
Legs:
Height from top of cop straight up center of leg to top edge of leather: 8"
Height at hip" 12"
Smallest inside circ. at bottom edge, just above knee: 18", with 2.5" of overlap remaining
Smallest circ. at largest part of leg: 22.5", with 4" of overlap remaining
Knee cops:
Wing to wing, straight across: 5.75"
Depth from wing level to deepest part: 4.25"
SS Elbows:
Wing to wing, straight across: 4 7/8"
Depth from wing level to deepest: 3.5+"
Mild rough elbows:
Wing to wing: 5"
Depth: Little less than 4.5"
Some things to note: The rough elbows are 16 gauge MILD (not SS like the others), the legs are not strapped for pointing to belt/gambeson, the other knee is already drilled for attachment and for the strap, but holes need de burred.
On the legs, I was originally going to have the points attached in the front, but found that they stay up better pointed slighty to the rear of the hip (on the side, more towards the back than the front), but you can put them where they fit you the best.
If you need anything else, let me know. I will be gone for a while this afternoon, but will get back with you as soon as I can.

It's no problem. Hopefully they will fit someone. There's GOT to be other "vertically challenged" people out there.
Thanks anyway,

I don't know why I didn't add this before, but here's a pic of the finished leg on me.

I got the package yesterday, and have to say, Cat, who taught you to peen rivets?
Those are the most perfectly formed rivets I've ever seen. And in Stainless to boot.
The completed leg is absolutly stunning. I'm really not worried about the rivets pulling out either. In fact, the young lady who's most likely to get these is indeed going to fight in them.
My only disapointment is that Cat didn't finish the project. I'm not sure I can duplicate her craftsmanship for the second leg.
Thanks Cat, for all the quality work.
Edited to add:
The elbows you made are great as well. I don't think I'll do anything to them except strapping and possibly adding a rondel to them. (They'll go with my splinted arms very well) Personaly, I don't see any need for more planishing on them. If one were to want to polish them, it would just be a matter of sanding and buffing.
End Edit

I am glad the package arrived safely, and I am very relieved to hear that you are happy with it!
Thank you for the compliments on the rivets! At the time I did those, I had never seen it done and just did the best I could without really knowing what they were supposed to look like. A couple weeks ago, I went out to Niall's place and he showed me some other ways to do it. Got some great tips from him, so THANKS Niall! He has been a great help to me. I also really appreciate the feedback on the way those were done because now I know they turned out ok.
(I wasn't really sure if that's what they were supposed to look like.)
I am also sure you could easily do them the same way on the other leg.
I am glad the rough elbows won't require much more work. They don't perfectly match each other, and I never got around to fixing that but hopefully they will do the job. I had also meant to round off the ends and sand the edges a little, but never got to that either. I would love to see pics of the splinted arms once you get the elbows attached, and I would love to see the legs being worn when you get the other one done!
Thanks again for the kind words! I really hope you get your money's worth out of it, and I am still willing to take them back if you decide you want to return them. Just let me know ASAP and I will refund the money.

You'll not be getting them back.
They'll see action.
What did you use as a rest to keep the rivet heads round? I've got a bolt modified into a rivet set, but it wouldn't work well for setting the rivets as you did. (with the head on the leather side.) I'm going to have to build me a new tool before I can finish the other leg.
But don't worry, I'll post pics when they are done.

I used a tin/lead alloy rivet anvil from Halberd's as the support. I covered it in a couple of layers of fabric to keep the lead from flaking off and getting stuck on the leather. After every few rivets, a hole would form in the fabric, so I just shifted the fabric to a new area. I also hammered the divot in the lead after each rivet so the hole didn't get too deep. It worked pretty well. (But the riveting took FOREVER!
