Looking for an Aspis

Post by Thaddeus »

At pennsic I saw some folks with what looked liked spun aluminum Aspis with the Lakedaemonian Lambda painted on them.

Does anyone know where those shields came from and who to contact to get one?

No they don't. Well, another think you might try is to find an old-fashioned snow skimmer disk. Thue ate like a 36" diam dished aluminum sled. they might be usable as an aspis.

I have seen those used as shields and remember them from my younger years. In neither application do they hold up all that well. They were a rather soft alloy it seems.

I'll see how far I get with making a helmet then get in touch with Sean. I have always fancied the hoplite look. Wishe Brand and Dirk had been doing the classical thing when I started. But that was some ahhh time ago.

I had 2 snow saucers as a kid my brother and i used as shields. eventaully we decided to see how strong they were and went at them with a fire axe, they were very very strong, so i would imagine it depended on the make and alloy
