Who wants a free side of leather?

Post by Russ Mitchell »

I need a favor, and it's a big one.

I need to either borrow, or else swap for gear.

Last weekend in July, I will portray the bodyguard to the head of the local "security" at a market fair, in 16-17th-century Hungary. He will be a minor noble leading a company of 15-20 footman.

The market will be attacked by perhaps 30 Ottoman footmen and 30 Ottoman horsemen, and our job is to put on a huge show while engaged in a fighting retreat, prior to being burned out of a building. The Ottomans will be taking prisoners for slaves until the Hussar cavalry arrives.

Since casualties are script-neutral, and I am a fencing instructor (whereas most of my opponents are very much not), I expect to cut myself a lot of Ottomans defending my principal before some akinji or asab does me dirty in a cloud of black powder, and will therefore attract attention. There will be a LOT of spectators, and I don't even vaguely look Hungarian. I do, otoh, strongly resemble the Scots-Irish side of my family, and Scots mercenaries were very common in Hungary at the time.

I need equipment, lowland or highland, for a Scot, say, appropriate to a cornet from the 16c to, at latest, ca. the Battle of Dunbar. I can provide some motley weapons to fit the bill, but have no even vaguely appropriate clothing. I'm 6', perfectly proportioned, and between 180 and 190.

I cannot afford to purchase this equipment for a one-off deal, but have leather, and, as soon as I can get the videos converted afterwards, a free video and my sincerest thanks. Other swaps possible.

Russ;

My persona in the SCA is a 16th century Scot from Kilcarren, in Ayreshire. Lowlander not far from the English border.

I'm 6 feet tall, and about 220 these days. All my garb would fit someone 6 feet and in the 185-195 range- - just might have a bit of extra room, which is certainly better than being too tight.

But - just what sort of thing are you looking for ? I've got a pretty good selection of Tudor style doublets. While thoroughly appropriate, the average spectator won't read "Scot" from seeing this sort of garb.

I may be able to help, but it depends on what you want it to look like...
