This is another prototype of an item I will be adding to my site. This was based off of a 15th century example.

This is a hardened leather document case, with an eagle tooled on the front. Hand sewn with waxed thread.

Dimensions:
Total height: ~9"
Outside diameter: ~2.5"
Inside diameter: ~2 1/8

$100 plus shipping. Insurance is extra and optional.

Nice! What is the leather weight you used and did you use to harden the leather?

It's made from 6/7 ounce leather (about an 1/8" thick), and it was water hardened and dried around a form. It has been treated with a wax based sealer on the outside, and has been glued up on the inside to hold the insert in place.

It's really cold out, but I will get outside in a bit and take some better pics.

That is SO cool! I will have to get you the pictures we took of the French example in the MET. If it wasn't German, and I had $100 not commited to other projects, I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Do you want info on where you can get linen and hemp cording for the sling carriage?

Chef, I would LOVE to have the info on the linen/hemp! I wondered what that string was. Thanks! I think I still need to answer an email you sent, so I will do that shortly.

Hi Cat, I owe you measures, which I will get to you later today (since we will work off an original).

Let me track down the cord for you - it must be cheaper to get linen and hemp cording than to cut leather for slings. The original image you posted possibly shows a braided silk cord, from it being parti-colour, although it could be linen or hemp.

So I wonder were the tops and bottoms done much like a costrel?

Sorry for the delayed response. The phone guys outside my house managed to single-handedly shut off both my phone and DSL service yesterday. 2 service calls from 2 different people and 24 hours later, they have managed to fix what they broke. On top of that, my oldest daughter was in a car accident last night and hurt her back and neck, and damaged her car (wasn't her fault) so I have spent the day using various cell phones to call insurance companies and doctor's offices to get her taken care of. Then we spent 3 hours at an urgent care waiting for treatment while the doctor discussed karate lessons with his staff for an hour. (within earshot of the patients)

It's been a hectic and frustrating 24 hours.

I'm not sure how the costrel tops are done. I based the construction of this one off of a few period examples of hard sided cases. The pic of the period piece I posted is not very big, but on a larger version, you can see the stitching at the top. The square boxes are done in that manner, so I will be changing my construction methods on those as well.

Thank you for asking! She's in pain, but hopefully it will turn out ok. She has back problems already, and is currently being treated for that, so I'm sure it REALLY hurts now. An older gentleman cut into her lane right in front of her, and she hit his driver's side door and then his car must have spun around into the passenger side of her car. Her front quarter panel will need replaced, and she's got scratches all down the passenger side of her car. Her air bag didn't go off, so I'm assuming that there isn't one in there or it's not functioning. It may be a good thing though, because that might have hurt her even more.

She felt bad for the guy. The poor guy already had a black eye from falling in his house. He said he didn't see her when he went to change lanes, and freely admitted the accident was his fault. What ticks me off is that his insurance still needs to "investigate the incident" even though he contacted them, told them it was his fault, AND the cops cited him and gave him a ticket. You wouldn't believe the nightmare we've been dealing with trying to get her medical treatment. We had to go to the urgent care because her doctor wouldn't take her until the insurance stuff is worked out. I hate insurance companies. If this guy's insurance denies the claim and won't pay, our health insurance won't want to pay either since it was someone else's fault.

His insurance company HAS been keeping in touch with us, so hopefully this won't be a problem.

I did a bit or researching and found some good photos on Karen's site and I figured it out; they are done a bit different than costrels sides.


Hope your daughter feels better soon; I was hit twice in my late teens and early 20s and my back hurt for a while each time too.
