Some time ago, Joe Piela, of lonely mountain forge made a set full set of Roman for a friend of mine, this would have been circa 1994ish. It was a full set order, it had lorica segmentata, I want to say that the helm was a Imperial G, but it could have had more of a praetorian shape, greaves that came up to cover his knees and I think Joe also made his cingulum, (the belt) It was all in stainless so a purest would have faulted it, but I can tell you that it was absolutely beautiful. My friend passed away after a long bout of illness two years now, and I have been thinking about him a lot, and I am determined to honor him by entering a tourney every year in a rig just like his, or as close as I can get, and fight in his name. I can make my own lorica segmentata, yes I am aware of the complexity level, and I have a better armor then myself to help me, but I can’t manage the helmet with my tools and skill set, and I don’t think Joe is making them anymore. Does anyone know who makes a good Imperial G or praetorian that is suitable for SCA combat?

CLANG was selling an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL roman helm here awhile back.

What is your price range? I may know someone with a super spiff roman that he would part with. Depending on price.

Yeah, Clang does them with the brows and everything.

I have the praetorian line sold by West Coast Armory... fits a 23.5" Melon and is mild steel. Had it for a year... just awesome with the locking cheek plates. No need for a chin strap.

I had someone who was interested in buying it, I'll find out this weekend. I'll post more tonight.

No one, besides CLANG Armoury captures the look of a Roman helmet.

Everything else looks like a cartoon helmet.

No need to be insulting there Primus. Clang makes fine items but he's not the only big dog in the house...so to speak.

I am not being insulting. I am very picky about Roman equipment, and I have not seen any other armourers producing anything that comes close to actually looking like a 1st century Roman helmet. As I have said all the other reproductions fall seriously short, and end up looking like a cartoon characters helmet.

Well mine is earlier but I dont think it falls short or looks like a cartoon helmet.
I dont often throw my hat in the ring so to speak, but I do fall into the catagory of "any other armourer"Although mine is based on a very simple late "BC" as opposed to an early "AD" piece

Ok, I guess I did open a can of worms. Call me biased here, but I believe CLANG builds the best 1st cent Roman helmet. Marks pieces capture the look better than anyone else. Icefalcon, and Adam you both produce excellent work, but I still do not think they capture the feeling that Marks work does.

Adam your helmet is based on a Gallic A right? I am not here to be critical of your work, or anyone elses, but your helmet only vaguely resembles the Gallic A.

I am sorry if I offended anyone by classifying their work as a cartoon helmet. I know I was using a very broad brush there.

I have seen too many helmets here called "Roman" or "Celtic" that only vaguely look like a period helmet. I suppose I am jaded when seeing these pieces.

Guys I can’t thank you enough. Clang does indeed make a nice hat, Truth be spoke i have been impressed with them all, and to white Mountain I am not surprised that yours came out as well as it did I have a good friend who has one of your hats and it is awesome. I'll take what you guys have shown me look closer at my budget and move on one. Again I can’t thank you guys enough.

I will see if I can find the original image out in my shop that was the basis for the helm.
The brow reinfoce, eyebrows and cheeks and tail are exactly what was pictured.
Infact the cheeks are exact as the side profile of the helmet was blown up on my copier untill it was the right size for the customer.
The bowl is a little deeper to help it pass muster for the SCA so some of its proportions are diff, the neck is longer.
There is even the same stepp edge treatment around the entire cheek but it cant be noticed in the pic because of the "roll" that prettymuch traces the entire helmet.
There is alot of loose paper in my shop, but Ill dig through it.
Its based on a specific "port" helmet

I'd have to agree with Primvs- Clang makes the best Roman helmet.

I've been emailing and emailing trying to get on the waiting list for one. I am really looking forward to having one built by him sometime.

Clang does indeed make a nice hat, and it is at a very solid price, which makes him hard to beat, I can understand the loyalty. That being said Squire Scorpus helm looked good, although I don’t know if he or someone else made it. For a slightly higher price Knotwolfs “Gaiusâ€

I am not offended, Marks are my fav anyway.
His are one of the reasons I dont offer one, the need has been filled as his are outstanding.
Mine is based on a "celt" piece so I realy should not have offered up the pic as this is about roman helms.

Similar Valerius, but mine is based of an earlier celtic "port" helmet.
It does not have all the fancy cheek shaping that that helmet has.
I cant for the life of me find the source material, but I got it from Sir Mord so I am going to see if he can send it to me again.

I love your helmet too. It is very cool. I've always been a sucker for brass accents on metal helmets and REALLY LOVE CLANGS!

In fact, I'll offer up my first born to get him to make me one.

VALERIUS – I stand corrected, I see what you mean about the Imperial Gallic A 1 (Nijmegen) When I was thinking G I was thinking more of the Imperial Gallic G 1 (Worms), Imperial Gallic G 4 (Mainz). The Mainz has the brow ridge lines like the Gallic A 1 does. I am sadly a simple Hospitalier new to the many variances in Roman gear. Thanks for your help

Double, double, toil and trouble... I'm part of the stir here, it seems.

I'm glad that several folks here like the hats that I make, but there are lots of capable armorers out there.

Adam, as you say about my early Roman helmets, I can say the same for your SCA kettle-helms. I've never built one because yours are the spiffy-est, and the niche is filled. (As an aside, don't be offended at Primvs' remarks-I happen to know that he admires your work.)

Now-my purpose in posting here is to link to the more recent Roman helmets that I've offered for sale, since they have yet to make it to my site. Hopefully I'll have them up there in a week or so. Tend to spend more time on the web-page updating during those cold winter nights, which we're getting already...

Yojimbo, the eyebrows on these are attached also, but the rivets are hidden. I did consider embossing them, but it was a time vs cost thing, and I figured it would be better to keep the price down a bit and make them separately. May change that one of these years when I build the next run of them.
