Severed Ways - thoughts...
http://www.severedways.com/
So, I rented it to night and wanted to know other's thoughts about it and if you enjoyed it or not.
Looking for input on the whole thing, from clothing, armour to the feeling the movie gives off...
Thanks.

The 'armour', for what it is, looks good - Viking age helmets are speculative, as there is only one positively identified example, which they based the 'hero's' helmet on, for the most part.
The problem with the clothing, in the North America shots, is they are drab, probably far more drab than anyones clothing would be, who could afford a helmet and a sword.
The feeling the film gives off? Well, it looks like a very painful, artsy film to me, with a not very realistic plot, given what we know about the Vineland colony from what archaeology has turned up, and what information - accurate or not - that the surviving legends of Lief Erikson provide. THe hero, who's face is not shown in the trailers, is particularly painful when you see him wagging his long hair through the air as if he was playing 'guitar hero'. Angsty crap would be my cursory evaluation of the general feel and plot of the film. It would seem to have a very modern political message underlying it as a drumbeat, if the trailers are anything to go by.
The music, if they followed the intro and trailers as a general feel, sucks and blows simultaneously, it is so bad, in my opinion, creating a mood for that time and place, although, god knows, modern 'vikings' have been looking to Heavy Metal Rock since the 1970's to express their 'viking-ness'. Surely the scalds of old relied heavily on the Electric guitar to sing the stories of heros.
When will people be able to combine good costuming, which this seems to have, with a good plot? An accurate costume unfortunately does not make for a good movie, as anyone who has suffered through that accurate production on William Wallace knows.

Yeah it was totally real. The feel of the movie reminded me of the blair witch project.
Most of the "errors" were small: the helms were way too shiny, the fur on the calves, no thought about winter coming and burning down a perfectly good start to a cabin to survive winter, "this fish is killer".
All and all it was a pretty good feel.
