Mitten gauntlets with finger tips.

Post by somedudeinutah »

Hello guys, just wondering if anybody has a reference to mitten gauntlets that cover up to the second knuckle, with separate finger tips and end lames. Am I dreaming, or have I seen a reference to these? Any help would be appreciated.

I posted a picture (1520?, Durer?) of a painting of some mittens with mail fingers.

There are 3 gauntlet types depicted in Rene de Anjous book of the tourney. The one on the far right is a 2 plate plus finger lame version. The pictures for that should be online someplace or I can track them down tomorrow from work.

Or did you need photographs of extant pieces?

There are probably lots of examples.

Early 15th c. Italian - the gauntlets on S18 in Churburg (with integral first segment of the finger protection).
Later in the 15th c. Italian many/most gauntlets seem to have covered the first 2 joints with plates and then the finger tips with scales/small plates/mail. Left hands were often made with one plate instead of two, so you would have more of the fingers covered with something other than the mitten protection.

A later example:

The fingers are missing, but the holes in the end plate appear to line up with fingers and likely originally secured finger plates.

There are others out there. With a specific period, someone may come up with a direct example.

Thanks guys, the Churburg S18 gaunts are very close to what I had in mind. I was looking for very early 15th century, and these fit the bill.

Ever seen an earlier version? Maybe with an hourglass cuff?

Would the site recognize those IMG files better if the JPG were changed to lowercase?

Didn't make a difference when I changed it here.
