Venetian Doctors

Hey all!

I didn't see an introduction forum, so I figured I'd just jump right in head first and ask my question.

I'd like to know everything there is to know about Venetian doctors. Specifically, what they would wear. I've read the description on Wikipedia, and on various other sites (who all, curiously, seem to have plagurized one another).

The shoes are pretty standard...at least at first glance. I've read that they are knee high, or even thigh high in some places.

Leather breeches, and leather gloves. And finally a wide brimmed hat.

When wikipedia says, "ankle length overcoat," what would it look like in the later 1650's? I've seen the engraving of Doktor Schnabel von Rom, but that's only one person...and not really enough to make a garment off of. At least, for me. But I really have no idea where I would even find a pattern for that, let alone make it.

All of this should be in black, save for the mask, which is to be white with red lenses.

I'm curious about that, however. Before I say it, I know, I know, it's beyond unrealistic (both in time frame and accuracy), but in Season of the Witch, the plague doctors wore what appears to be white robes over white aprons, over a black...something. I would pass over it as crap as I did with the rest of my movie, except that this clearly shows a plague doctor wearing white.

So now I'm really confused, because it appears that the only thing that was standard (from the two images I've seen) is that the coat does not open in the front, but appears to be more gown-like in that you would pull it over your head to put it on, with an attached coif.

I'm new to medieval clothing and research, and don't have any idea on how to go about it. While looking at bascinet patterns, I came across this site (and forum) and, upon seeing the wealth of knowledge (backed up by sources, no less!), I knew this was the place to ask!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
