OK, I think I understand that. I'll try it next time I grab up an image.

Thanks,

Splendid! The ring on that first one reminds me of things I have seen described as buckles. I wonder what's up with that.

I suspect that it actually is a re-purposed buckle. "Waste not, want not" applied to the medieval period too. Metal is metal, and you can usually find a use for it. (...he said, sorting through his drawers and cans of nuts, bolts, rings, and other tosh. )

Hm. Can't find them there under searches for surrender or key. Will continue looking, though.

Draft page is now up to 76 bullet points though, so it's not exactly lacking in examples (although it is admittedly somewhat thin in the 14th century section).

They weren't tagged, Karen. I just ran down through a search until I saw something.

I have them saved in a folder as well, where they still have the same names that they did when I downloaded them. If you show me which ones they are I can tell you what they are labeled.

The first one is labeled 1191-5_large
The second 1191-16_gallery

I hope this helps.

Okeydokey, will keep looking for them.

Have continued adding to http://larsdatter.com/keychains.htm -- the Middle English word for this seems to be a "key-bond."

This one is a very interesting object. It seems to have at one time had a number little leather tabs to which keys were fastened. The fact that the tabs were on both sides (the surviving key on the top is attached in back) suggests that it was not a belt per se, but rather something that perhaps hung from a belt.

Perhaps it was an object like this one.

Some time ago, I think I saw another image like the one above, but I can not recall where. I think it was another "visitation". A Google Image search is not bringing it up... probably because the color pallet was different.

Remember the key-sticks we were talking about the other day, in the surrender scenes? They also come up in images of prison guards -- compare Charles of Lower Lorraine is a captive, De casibus (BNF Fr. 230, fol. 254), 3rd quarter of the 15th century and Iseut imprisoned, Tristan de Léonois (BNF Fr. 102, fol. 74v), c. 1470

Here's something from the Portable Antiquities Scheme

They think it's medieval. I'm not sure I can tell.

And here's another. It's not clear what the object is or does, but if it is medieval, it shows us an early form of "split ring".
