Early 14th century gauntlets

Post by RandallMoffett »

So I was going through the wonderful Effigies and Brasses site looking for some things and found this. I know there are a few other effigies like it but I am wondering what other interpretations are of these.

http://effigiesandbrasses.com/687/928/

I am seeing over lapped plates for a cuff. Seems to be one piece that is likely a rather trapezoidal shape I'd think .I suspect the plates at the back of the hand are segmented as well.

Any better images? I did a google search and pulled nothing.

Any ideas? Evidence? More photos?

Thanks,

Randall

It looks like the pieces covering the wrist/forearm cover about 5/8 of the circumference. I think I'd want at least a floating plate overlapping that.

It looks as there is a plate on the inside of the wrist underlapping the two outer plates. Would be interesting to see closeups from different angles. The outer plates have rivets probably going all the way around. These could perhaps be for articulating leathers?

Problem with that is that they would not articulate if they are strapped tight over the inside plate.

BA,

I think that is a fair point. Looks like it does not go full circle from what I am seeing as well.

Xtracted,

I'll have to see if better pictures are around. I cannot see that but could be. The largest I can expand this I cannot get that good of detail.

Thanks for the comments,

I think that's just the glove. You'd have nearly zero flexibility in your wrist with a plate to the inside like that.

This is the picture with most visible details. The rivet heads are very large and flat. Reminds me of modern leather rivets.

It appears to me that the rivets are holding on the straps running under the wrists. It is a pity that the artist has done the usual thing of distorting the form of the gauntlets in order to accommodate the 'praying' hands pose.

There are two additional rivets on each cuff plate to rivet the plates to the base glove. I'm simply amazed at the time taken to carve the mail as interlocking rings.

BA,

That is a good point. But if they are articulated like this then they should have some movement.

Xtracted,

Great photo!

James,

True. It makes it hard to figure them out. It does sort of look like the straps come out from there doesn't it.

Ernst,

I was thinking a liner or glove as well. It is amazing the level of detail.

Bo,

Those look very nice. Are they attached to a leather system of straps or something?

Thanks for the ideas,

Check out the 5th & 6th pics http://terra-teutonica.ru/topic166-25.html These have a similar open wrist. It looks like smaller plates riveted side by side overlapping upwards.

Len,

Cool find. Yes they do look similar in design don't they.

Thanks for the additional photos!

If indeed that plate under the straps is a metal plate and not of stout leather, say.

All the wrist flexing of course is taking place a couple inches over.

I need to make up some mockups. Still kicking some ideas around. I am thinking the cuffs are open still on the inside. I am going to make them almost like mini faulds maybe?

Just found these (scroll down a bit) https://www.flickr.com/photos/roelipila ... 796/page10 This looks like an obvious way to connect the hand and cuff, but it's the only one I've seen like this.
