Wooden helmets?

Vincent Ore linked this in Ian L's most recent video.

1369 Inventory of Château de Rodès of Ramon de Peyrellons
The original document is in an Occitan-Catalan mix, and errors could have been introduced, or nuances lost in translation to modern French.
- Un chapel de bois sans courroie.
- 6 heaumes de bois avec face de fer.
A chapel of wood without leathers.
6 helms of wood with faces of iron.

I suspect tournament use, like leather helmets of earlier and later date. Any other ideas?
