I'm wondering how the bevors of Italian export armours were attached to the breastplate. Take for example the Alla Tedesca armour in the Prediger in Scwhäbisch Gmünd. For one thing the bevor is under the breastplate the way this harness is displayed. I have issues with this since any impact on the bevor would push it into your throat. I'd expect that mounting the bevor to the outside of the breastplate would be more safe. The bevor has attachment holes, one big one in the centre of the bevor collar and the customary two at the peak of the collar. I expect the two holes at the peak of the bevor collar were meant to attach a leather strap. This would have been connected to a buckle attached to the breastplate. The breastplate, however has no holes where the buckle could have been attached. The only thing I can think of is that the buckle was directly attached to the breastplate via the sternum rivet on the breastplate either using a bit of leather or a brass buckle plate.
Question: Has anybody seen any artwork where somebody is wearing Italian export armour with no bevor thus showing the attachment menhod of the breastplate buckle?
St. Florian. The image shows the two brass rivets that attached the bevor retention strap to the bevor collar.
Same arrangement here as St Florian has, two retention strap attachment holes at the base of the bevor collar.
No visible buckle attachment holes on the breastplate on the Schwäbisch Gmünd harness.
