Earliest Frog-faced helm date

Post by clifford rogers »

This is from a MS (http://www.e-codices.unifr.ch/de/list/o ... -hist0033b) dated 1420-1440. The style of helmet shown here appears twice in it. I'm thinking that might allow a somewhat more precise dating (at least tentatively). What's the earliest other image of a similar helm?

Thanks
Cliff

I'm having trouble finding a better image of the jousting helmet in the Goldene Rossl, the ornamental sculpture which was given to Charles VI of France by his wife Isabeau of Bavaria as a new years gift in 1404/5. I think Blair has a drawing of it. It's a precise little bit of goldsmith's work, and closely relates to the shape of a group of surviving early frog-mouthed helmets which come from English churches, including A186 at the Wallace Collection. The dating of these helmets varies a lot by author (the 1962 Wallace Collection catalogue gives c.1515), but the helmet in the sculpture, which is firmly dated, is an important piece of evidence.

I'll post a better image if I can find one.

The earliest I've found is from 1386, Switzerland.

I was thinking about Walter's helm, but you've beaten me to it. I can not think of anything any earlier, but it would not surprise me if there's something I'm missing.
