Round Targets

I had a few hours to put up a typology of round shields in Catholic Europe around the 14th century.

It seems like there are the kind with no bosses and straps on the back like a 16th century rotella ...

the kind with one boss which are probably overgrown bucklers, ...

and the kind with four or six bosses which are the same as the oriental kalkan, separ / sipar, and dhal shields. Can anyone think of other types that show up often enough to fit in a typology?

Its funny that we say that the Norman shield replaced the centergrip round shield, but already in the 12th century we hear of infantry with targets which are probably medium-sized round shields.

Edit: Vegard Vike talks about a reconstruction of a 'great buckler' in the museum in Norway where he works. His buckler is of elm wood with many iron reinforcements and is 2.1 kg in weight and 40 cm in diameter http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/ ... php?t=7398
