Source for Substantial Wool Jersey?

Post by Pietro da San Tebaldo »

Does anyone have a good source for wool jersey cloth for hosen? Most of the stuff I can find locally is far too light to stand up, especially under leg harness.

Why use jersey? It wasn't available in the middle ages. Hose were made from woven woollen fabric, and are quite easy to make from it. If you want them to stretch, cut the fabric on the bias.

I've worn hose made from woollen fabric for years, with no problems at all (except my own incompetence as a tailor).

Be sure to "full" your wool before cutting when using woven stuff! (ie. wash in hot water and dry in the dryer a few times before cutting). It gives you a little more stretch, and you can wash your hosen the modern way!

Reinhard: Thank you! That was just the information that I needed to know, just when I needed to know it. Lucky, lucky me.

Be sure you have enough fabric! Wool can shrink by as much as half while fulling!
