Hi all. Does anyone know what the common materials used for embroidery were in the late 14th century(cotton,linen, metallic or ribbon threads)? Also, does anyone know a source for embroidery patterns that are typical for the period? Im thinking about doing some embroidery on the sleeves of a coathardie I'm going to be making, but i want to make sure i keep this garment strictly "period".

Check out "Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince". It goes into quite a bit of detail on embroidery and some discussion of designs from the Great Wardrobe. As for patterns, look to illuminations of the period. Artists gerneraly depicted embroidered clothing accurately.

Thanks Munz, i appreciate the reply. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the book for a month or so now, im currently on the waiting list to check it out at the local library.
