I was wondering if anyone could tell me something? I am trying to find the name (if there is one) of the thing (because I have no idea what it is) that the lances rested on before the knight used the lance in the joust. Or did they just lean them against something in preparation for the next pass? Or did such a thing exist? I have no clue. I am writing a story and needed the this information. I have searched the web in the appopriate sites but have come up empty.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is a bit of a stumper. While jousters are described as having someone in charge of the lances handing them up to the horseman as required, and any self-respecting tournament would have such functionaries, said functionaries might desire something to keep the lances conveniently at hand and upright. Perhaps one should simply say "lance-rack," or get Frenchified and say "râtelier à lances."

Are you referring to a lance "rack" where they would be leaned or stored on the ground?

Or are you referring to the stirrup cup (for lack of a better term) where the lance could be slotted vertically to carry it or to make it easier to hold onto out of the way while you were standing in a line while sitting in the saddle. ???

If in reference to while on horseback waiting for the next pass- it's called a foot(that thing ya walk on...) or you could say sabaton. ;-)
If in reference to on the ground, place lances stored- I would have to agree to call it a lance rack.

LOL, I am that squire! :-)
Hopefully my audition will go well enough that I will end up jousting this summer, rather than just holding the lance on foot for others!
Wish me luck!

Thanks for the help! Everyone I have talked with hasn't any idea of the name or if there is one. One of my author friends said to call it a rack, which I probably will until someone can tell me different. Thanks again.
