I finally had an opportunity to talk to Larry Harley about his boar hunts. His standard package is a custom Bowie (he's also a knifemaker), and a hunt to kill a boar with that knife.

He said he'd be receptive to medieval hunters, although he recommended they use a knife instead of a spear - "a lot more fun", according to him.

I didnt know you was buddies with Larry Harley, I been wantin to go on one of his hunts since long as I can remember. Got to handle a couple of his knives at a gun show once, he does awesome work.

I've only met him a couple of times, we're in the same forge group. He had one of his bowies with him today, very nice work.

this is the same animal I pumped 2 shotgun slugs into and it seemed to just PISS IT OFF.

It finally dropped when I put a .357 slug into its head.....and you want to hunt it with a KNIFE???

I'd want full steel legs, arms, gauntlets, and helm, with a 44 mag back up. But the spear idea sounds like an adreneline rush, if you survived.

It's a bit pricey for a hunt when ham is less than $2/lb.

If I had the extra cash, I would do it.

Sounds like fun. I've been on wild boar hunts like that before. It really isn't that big of a deal. There is like 6 or 7 trained dogs. One latched on to each leg, one on each ear and one on their uh.. sensitive bits. Its pretty safe unless the hawg gets free right at the moment you go in for the kill. Then it gets pretty scary.

The hawgs there don't sound too 'wild' if it is 100% guaranteed. The hawgs I have killed before I wouldn't do with just a spear... even a spear with 10 of my best buds with spears. One hawg I got had a shield on it 4" thick. You couln't stab through that with anything. Hell my .223 couldn't punch through it. But with dogs it is relativly safe.... but i would still bring a sidearm.

This is the same animal that my grandfather used to catch and castrate, then let go. We avidly hunted them after two seasons.

Holy crap! I want in on that..Well, you guys can have your knives, I'll stick with a spear. Either way, I want in!!!

I'm not going to get in the middle of this, if you want to go you should call or email Larry Harley (there's really nothing I could do but muddy the water, and he's only going to hold a place for those who make a deposit anyway).

I've only killed one boar (using a longbow), but the place I hunted used small dogs so it would be "sporting", i.e., so the hog has a chance to skin your shins if you don't pay attention. If I could still keep up with the dogs, I wouldn't mind trying this at all as Larry uses slightly larger dogs. That doesn't mean, of course, that they don't lose their grip now and then, you still need to keep your wits about you.

As for armour, I would recommend strongly that you leave it home, unless Larry tells you otherwise. There's a lot of running involved, and you want to be light and mobile in case you get in a spot and choose to climb a tree. That's a Hobson's Choice for certain.

Kyle, the spear would likely be too dangerous to the dogs and guides in such close quarters. Larry said the best method is to grab a handful of the long hair on the ridge of the back with your off hand, and use it for leverage to drive the knife home.

We used to do an Fighting "boar hunt' for SCA..

A woods melee w a nifty variation,,

The Boar was a florintine fighter,,

Hounds wer armed w a single shortsword,,

The Hunter got a boarspear,,,

the boars would run thru the woods and the hounds had to chase or flush them out and it took X amount of blows for the hounds to kill the boar, and a single face thrust from the spear, and X amount of body stabs,,

but the boars would sometimes ambush the hunter and kill him, just like in real boarhunting,, and even lure hound packs to ambushes w several boars in wait..

I was at an event in the Berkeley hills one year, and the park rangers had pointed out people had seen wild boar in the hills. The king wanted to put on his plate and go out hunting with his new hunting sword, and people tried various ways to convince him that this was a Very Bad Idea.

"You kill it, you clean it," was one try. No problem, said the king.

Finally, some relative newbie stepped forward. "Your majesty, I am mundanely employed as a member of the DNR. May I see your hunting license, please?"

That worked.

I was in mid-western VA talking to a game warden, and when he found out I was from coal country he said "you hillbillies are all alike - if I stop you you'll have every kind of hunting/trapping/fishing license, damage stamp, National Forest stamp, and county stamps that can be imagined, even for counties you don't hunt - but when I look under your truck, I'm likely to find 4 deer, 6 turkeys, 25 squirrels and a hundred trout filets".

I learned a valuable lesson from him - they're wise to that under-the-truck trick.
