Armored Defensive Hat

Greetings to the list. When I was visiting the Royal Armory at Leeds, I came across an example of a civilian defensive hat circa 1580-1590:

I'm currently trying to do some background research on additional examples of these.
Can anyone recommend citations to these or examples of the plating patterns that were commonly used for either these or coat of plates from around this time period? (In particular, I'd love to see photos of period examples that have been opened up to reveal their construction.)
Thanks for your help.
Selene
