As I recall, the ailette, the small, rectangular plates attached between the shoulder and the neck, above the collarbone, is an artifact that seen in the 13th century. I'm fairly certain that it is later than the era of common use of the "conical" style of helm, if that is what you mean by "spangen"

Very late 13th c and early 14th c for ailettes. (see the Lutrell Psalter) Spangenhelms seem rare at this point. Great helms and sugarloafs would work best. If you had heraldry and felt you were worth being identified from the side, you were probably also wearing a full, up-to-date suit.
